Waverly Place Shop Floods After Downpour

'Never have seen this,' the owner of The Eyeglass Shoppe said.

Rick Ziccarello has owned The Eyeglass Shoppe on Waverly Place in Madison for 30 years and never experienced flooding in his business like he discovered Tuesday morning.

When he arrived to work, the entire carpet was soaked and items on the floor were damaged.

Expecting a normal day of business—the shop is closed Mondays—he and his family cleaned and emptied the store and took out the carpet instead.

"Never have seen this," he said.

Madison streets flooded briefly Monday morning. The Alternative Press posted photos of water reaching sidewalks on Main Street. One to two inches of torrential rain fell on Morris County fell on Morris County starting around 9 a.m., the Daily Record reported.

There have been a handful of times when a couple feet into The Eyeglass Shoppe, just past the entrance, has gotten wet, but never water apparently rushing into the entire store, Ziccarello said. A former travel agency next door, at the corner of Lincoln Place, also got wet.

On Wednesday, he plans to talk with Madison officials to see if there's anything the borough can do. He said the municipality always has been responsive in looking into issues.

"I can't repair everything and then have it happen again," he said.
