As weather forecasts call for more snow and ice beginning Tuesday, the Madison Fire Department is again asking residents for their assistance in clearing snow from the borough's 1000 fire hydrants. Fire Chief Lou DeRosa said that department personnel have been shoveling out hydrants since Friday, and thanked residents for their efforts to clear snow, but that there are still many more hydrants to be cleared. "We are asking residence to “adopt a hydrant” if it is near or on you property," DeRosa said. "It will make a BIG difference if there is a fire in their neighborhood."

The Madison Fire Department is asking residents to maintain safety by helping to dig out the borough's 1000 hydrants buried under the deep snow dumped by the blizzard. "There is no ordinance requiring property owners to clear hydrants—it's just common sense," said Fire Chief Louis DeRosa. "Clearing snow from hydrants will help us do our jobs, and in turn help to keep the town safe." DeRosa said hydrants should be cleared of snow to their base and up to three feet in each directions, including a pathway from the roadway. Hydrants throughout town also were buried under several feet of the white stuff by plows clearing streets as well as by huge drifts caused by the storm's high winds.
