Walgreens Hopes to Open By Year's End

No opening date set yet for Madison location, the pharmacy chain said.

The Madison Walgreens could be open by January. Walgreens spokesman Robert Elfinger said the drugstore chain hopes to open its Madison location later in 2012, and no exact opening date has been set yet. Certain aspects of the project still need borough approval. On Tuesday, the Madison Planning Board is scheduled to review an application for signage at the site, 122 Main Street. When construction on the two-story office-retail building, called Gateway to Madison, started in March, a sign at the site said the 10,253-square-foot store would be opening in September. The company did not say what affected the opening timeline. A construction accident temporarily stopped work in May. A message was left for developer Rocco Iossa Jr. Plans call …

Madison Station

I'd like to know what is going in the front store, facing main street, with the doors opening to the intersection. Location, location, location. It doesn't get better than that. Relocate the Madison Starbucks and open a new Starbucks in Chatham? The current Madison location parking lot is a joke in the morning. They probably lose half their business to folk that go to turn in, then say, "forget …   more ›

Council Puts Limits on 24-hour Businesses

Vote is unanimous, as several residents from area surrounding potential Walgreens site look on.

It's going to be a lot harder to open a 24-hour business in Madison. The borough council passed an ordinance Monday night that prevents retail establishments located near residential areas from conducting business between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. The limitation applies to any business in the CBD-1, -2 and CC Zones which is also within 300 feet of any residential zone. The ordinance, drawn up by borough attorney Joe Mezzacca upon request by members of the council, came after Rocco Iossa Jr., owner of the commercial building currently being built at the corner of Greenwood Avenue and Main Street, indicated he was considering a 24-hour Walgreens as a tenant. Mezzacca has said multiple times that, in his opinion, the ordinance is …

Ordinance Sent to Planning Board Would Prevent 24-Hour Businesses in Certain Zones

Would prevent new businesses in areas near residential zones from staying open between 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The Borough Council has voted to send an ordinance to the Planning Board for review that would keep 24-hour businesses from taking root in certain borough zones. The ordinance, which was introduced at the council's regular meeting on Monday, would prevent retail businesses set in the CBD1, CBD2, and CC zones, which are also located 300 feet away from a residential zone, from being open during the hours between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. The action takes place about a month after the Planning Board hesitated to vote to memorialize a site plan for the property at the corner of Main Street and Greenwood Avenue, after it was learned that owner and applicant Rocco Iossa Jr. was interested in having Walgreens as a likely tenant, and that 24/7 usage …

Potential Walgreens Site Plan Memorialized

Memorialization motion failed to get a second, causing an executive session at the end of the meeting before a unanimous 'yes' vote.

It took a half hour closed session, but the site of a potential Walgreens ultimately had its preliminary and final site plan approval memorialized by the Planning Board on Tuesday night. Memorialization on the property located at 122 Main St. could not get a second to the motion upon first try early in the meeting. It became obvious the board was unwilling to pass the resolution swiftly when no one spoke up initially to make a motion for the project, which has become more contentious during the past two meetings. Planning Board Chair Steve Tombalakian eventually made the motion, but there was no second to follow. The item had to be held to the end of the meeting, when the board went into executive session, citing potential litigation as a …
