Sandy 'Wreaked Havoc' on 65 Percent of NJ, Poll Says

One in five residents said they felt forced out of their homes by the storm.

Superstorm Sandy made an impact on approximately two-thirds of the state, according to results from a Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Tuesday. An even higher percentage (94 percent) of the 1,228 polled New Jersey residents reported that they lost power at some point during or after the storm. About 65 percent of those polled said they remained without power for at least five days.  "Two-thirds of New Jersey residents were affected when Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on the Garden State three weeks ago," a press release about the poll said. Approximately one in five residents said they were forced out of their homes by the storm, with about 6 percent of residents telling pollsters they were still not able to permanently return. Despite Sandy, NJ Travel to Remain Steady

AAA New Jersey predicts about 1 million residents of the Garden State will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend.

About one million New Jersey residents and 43.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving weekend, AAA New Jersey predicts. The impact of Hurricane Sandy is still uncertain, especially in the mid-Atlantic and northeast regions. Cathleen Lewis, the director of Public Affairs for AAA New Jersey, said, "While many residents [of New Jersey] may cancel travel plans, many others may change travel plans to accommodate or assist displaced friends and family." How will we get there? Sandy may influence how New Jerseyans will travel this holiday. As Lewis said, "Rental cars have become a coveted commodity by those who lost vehicles in the storm.” AAA recommends confirming any existing reservations for a rental car with the …

Bistro Invites Restaurants Affected by Sandy to 'Pop Up' in Madison

Rob's Bistro chef/owner Robert Ubhaus, who learned to cook at a restaurant on Long Beach Island, is inviting restaurants to set up in Madison for a night.

Rob's Bistro on Main Street in Madison is offering any chef or restaurateur affected by Superstorm Sandy the opportunity to use its place to create a "pop-up" restaurant of their concept on a Monday night, when Rob's is normally closed, the restaurant has announced. Proceeds from the pop-up can be designated to the rebuild of the restaurant, the surrounding community, or to a charity of the chef's choice, Rob's said. Rob's Bistro chef/owner Robert Ubhaus, a Chatham resident, learned to cook at The Green Gables in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island in the 1990s, and "wants to help the Jersey Shore come back better than before," he said in a news release. Many restaurants flooded, including where he used to cook. Ubhaus' parents' house on the …

Sandy Poses Unique Challenges to NJ Candidates

Politicians said this election season was 'very difficult' because of storm.

After millions of New Jersey residents spent most of last week without power, gas, and even lost their homes, Tuesday’s general election was likely the farthest from their minds. But for politicians who have continued to campaign through the storm, the election has remained a focus. “It’s been a very, very difficult procedure because of the storm,” Essex County Freeholder Vice President Patricia Sebold said. Sebold is the Democratic chairwoman in Livingston and has helped local candidates with their own races. She said her candidates have struggled to reach voters as power outages have stopped their printer, in Irvington, from producing mailers. “I’ve never experienced anything like this ever, in all my years of being involved in politics…

Power Returning for Some, Days Away for Others

Much of Madison should have power Friday, but areas with major damage have a longer wait.

An earlier version of this store included a number to call to listen to recorded updates. The number was removed and should not be called because it is interfering with emergency calls. Much of Madison is expected to have power Friday, while certain areas that sustained major damage from Superstorm Sandy likely will be without power for another three to five days, the mayor said. In a recorded 8 p.m. Thursday update, Mayor Bob Conley said progress was being made in clearing roads and restoring circuits. All roads in the borough except Overhill Drive and Seven Oaks Circle have been cleared, and the Madison Electric Utility hopes to have all of its circuits up Friday, he said. Crews—including Madison employees, two crews from Louisiana, and …
