St. Hubert's Helping Shelters, Pets Impacted by Sandy

Woodland Avenue location is serving as a regional distribution center for needed pet supplies.

St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center is accepting and distributing donations to help shelters and families with pets impacted by Hurricane Sandy, according to the organization's website. Supplies are accepted at the center's Community Room, 575 Woodland Ave. Those in need of donations are encouraged to call Nora Parker at 973-377-7094 ext. 226. Rocco's Fuels Storm Recovery With 200 Pies, Gallons of Soup

Madison restaurant brought contingent to Toms River to nourish volunteers and affected homeowners.

Gino Iossa got the idea to support Superstorm Sandy recovery efforts while he was searching online for photos of his family's home in Ortley Beach, a section of Toms River. The home was destroyed. As he was searching, he came across a picture of kids looking disheveled and realized they had no food. Iossa, executive chef of Rocco's Tuscany Bar and Grill in Madison, reached out to Lavallette Police saying he wanted to help. That started a chain of connections that eventually led him to the Church of Grace and Peace in Toms River. The church, which serves as a headquarters for relief efforts in the area, welcomed Iossa's offer of food and scheduled time for Rocco's to serve on Monday. Tsunami Survivors From Japan to Discuss Recovery

High school students will discuss how they coped with the aftermath of the March 2011 tsunami.

Students from five Japanese high schools are scheduled to present their experiences with disaster and recovery from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Fairleigh Dickinson University's College at Florham campus. The students will discuss the aftermath of the March 2011 tsunami in Japan at a time when New Jersey is recovering from Superstorm Sandy. "We feel the message from young people about how they have coped / are coping with the aftermath of a natural disaster is particularly relevant for the people of New Jersey at this time," organizers Karen Bessin and Nori Tadano said. FEMA Disaster Recovery Center Opens in Morris

Morris Plains center is open seven days a week to answer questions about what help is available.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has opened a Disaster Recovery Center at the Morris Plains Community Center, 51 Jim Fear Drive, for residents impacted by Hurricane Sandy, according to an announcement from the Morris County government. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week until further notice. A Disaster Recovery Center is where applicants may go for information about FEMA or other disaster assistance programs, or to get answers to questions related to their individual case, according to the federal agency. Ambulance Corps Collecting Items for Storm Victims

Mittens, blankets and baby formula among the items sought.

The Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 29 Prosepect Street, is collecting donations for Hurricane Sandy victims in New Jersey from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, according to a flier posted on RoseNet.org. Organizes said items should not be left unattended at other hours, and are only requesting items in this list: Madison Junior School also is collecting donations for storm victims.

'No Estimate' for Morris Train Service Restoration

NJ Transit is offering free alternatives starting Friday.

New Jersey Transit spokesman John Durso, Jr. has no estimate for when rail service along the Morris and Essex line will resume. "The damage wrought on the M&E was amongst the worst suffered by any NJ Transit rail line in the state," Durso said in an email to Chatham Patch. "There are no estimates ... [for when] the M&E can safely resume service." To help residents commute to Manhattan, New Jersey Transit has established three methods of transportation free of charge starting Friday. Madison Charters Buses to NY to Help Commuters

With Superstorm Sandy shutting down NJ Transit lines, borough gives commuters an alternative, $20 round-trip.

Madison is chartering buses to New York as an alternative to NJ Transit after after Superstorm Sandy disrupted train service. The borough notified the Chathams, Harding and Florham Park about the buses so residents of those towns also could be notified of the service, Borough Administrator Ray Codey said. The buses are scheduled to start taking passengers at 6 a.m. and then leave when they are full, or at 7 a.m. The buses are stationed at the Madison Train Station parking lot, on the Kings Road side. "We will be providing this service  Monday through Friday (except on holidays) until the NJ Transit System is up and running," Madison announced on its website. Hurricane Sandy Relief Items to Be Collected at MJS

Items can be dropped off in the main lobby of Madison Junior School during school hours.

Madison Junior School students and staff will be collecting cleaning supplies, food, blankets, toiletries and other items for Hurricane Sandy victims from Wednesday, Nov. 7, through Tuesday, Nov. 13, Student Council advisor Stephen Finkelstein said Tuesday. He said the school has compiled a list of needed items based on information from several organizations. According to a flier about the collection, items include Where will the items go? The flier says food items will be brought to the Interfaith Food Pantry which is currently distributing food to Morris County victims. Madison Schools Open Thursday, Friday

Providing a full week of instruction outweighs disruptions from higher than normal absentee rates and some maintenance projects, superintendent said.

Madison Public Schools will be open on Thursday and Friday, the superintendent announced Monday. The schools originally were closed those days for the annual NJEA convention in Atlantic City, but the event was canceled on account of Superstorm Sandy. Superintendent Dr. Michael Rossi said a higher than normal student and faculty absentee rate and some maintenance projects will be disruptive, but the district would be able to work through any issues. Madison Schools to Open Monday

The last of the schools had power restored Saturday.

Madison Public Schools will re-open Monday, following the district calendar, after closing all of last week because of damage, blocked roads and power outages around the borough caused by Superstorm Sandy, Superintendent Dr. Michael Rossi announced. The last of the schools without power, Torey J. Sabatini, had power restored as of Saturday afternoon. A decision about the possibility of using Thursday and Friday as school days will be made by the end of the day Monday. Greetings Madison Learning Community.
