Morris County residents are invited to come, learn and share ideas about making schools safer.
Since the Newtown shootings, school safety has been on the minds of many throughout the nation and here at home. In an effort to generate community discussion on the topic, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office wants to get citizens talking. In partnership with the East Hanover School District, the New Jersey Department of Education and the Morris County Superintendent of Schools, the prosecutor's office is sponsoring a Morris County School Safety and Security Summit. In-depth analysis of all Madison schools will be conducted this month, the superintendent said.
An expert with the Department of Homeland Security met this week with Madison school district, police and fire officials about school safety, and is planning to conduct an in-depth analysis of security at all Madison schools, the superintendent said. The findings are expected to be presented at a community forum. The Homeland Security official, Alfonse Imperiale, met with Superintendent Dr. Michael Rossi, Business Adminsitrator Gary Lane, School Resource Officer Lisa Esposito and fire Capt. Edward Nunn on Tuesday, Rossi said. Madison Mayor Bob Conley, a member of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, started the new year by signing a pledge joining Mayors Against Gun Violence. Separately, Borough Councilman Robert Catalanello, a member of the National Rifle Association, plans to introduce a resolution at the governing body's next meeting urging Congress to use New Jersey's gun laws as the laws for the entire U.S., the mayor said. The Madison officials are weighing in on gun laws in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
