Alleged Robbery Attempt Thwarted By Off-Duty Cops

Madison officers come to the aid of man being chased by five individuals in Newark, police say.

Two off-duty Madison Police officers thwarted a robbery attempt when they saw five individuals chasing a man on train tracks near Route 21 in Newark on Monday night, authorities said. The officers, Paul Papamarkos and Luis Goncalves, were on their way to a holiday party around 7:30 p.m. when they saw the man being pursued, Madison Acting Police Chief Darren Dachisen said in a statement Wednesday. The Madison officers' vehicle was equipped with emergency lights from one of the officers' involvement with volunteer firefighting, and they activated the lights as they approached the situation, Dachisen said. I feel safe around those parts, even at night. But I do agree that it would be nice to see more police officers (Newark, Essex County and NJ Transit) around the Light Rail stops and also the Broad Street station.   more ›

Updated: Former Boro Man Charged With Shell Robbery

Jason K. Locket, 32, was arrested Wednesday, authorities said.

A 32-year-old Newark resident who used to live in Madison was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with armed robbery for the May 22 hold up of the Madison Shell on Main Street, authorities said. Jason K. Locket was arrested in Newark by New Jersey State Parole Officers and turned over to Madison police, at which point he was arrested by borough Detective Sean Plumstead, according to a Madison Police news release. Arrest warrants were signed on May 25 for armed robbery, first degreee; theft, third degree; possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second degree; and unlawful possession of a weapon, third degree, police said. Cops: Madison Shell Robbed at Gunpoint

Main Street gas station held up early Tuesday; suspect fled southbound on Prospect Street by foot, authorities said.

A man brandishing a handgun robbed the Madison Shell on Main Street around 2:24 a.m. Tuesday and fled southbound on Prospect Street by foot, authorities said. The man reportedly walked up to the attendant in the station booth and asked for cigarettes, Madison Police said in a news release. As the attendant retrieved the cigarettes and unlocked the door, the man put on a ski mask and brandished the gun, police said. The man ultimately made off with between $600 and $1,000 in cash, police said. The suspect is described as a heavyset black male, 20 to 25 years old, approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall, with dreadlocks, police said.
