Christie Helped Self More Than Romney, Poll Says

Governor of New Jersey's convention speech was best for the man himself, according to FDU's numbers.

Did Gov. Chris Christie gave a bigger boost to himself than to presidential hopeful Mitt Romney with his speech at the Republican National Convention? According to registered New Jersey voters who took place in a recent poll, yes, he did. Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind reports that 58 percent of registered voters with knowledge of the speech believe he was more successful at selling himself to the American public than advocating the Romney/Ryan ticket. According to the poll's results, only 23 percent said the speech was more effective at helping to convince the electorate to support Romney. “Governor Christie’s speech was seen or heard by a national audience, many of whom were being introduced to the governor for the first …

FDU Poll: Christie's on Right Track

Do you agree? Take our own poll below

Good news for Gov. Chris Christie. Not only do a majority of New Jersey residents have a favorable few of the governor in the latest Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll, his numbers are up a healthy bit since last year. Read FDU's full statement on the poll, and take our own poll at the bottom of this post to let us know what you think: New Jerseyans, for the second survey in a row, say the state is headed in the right direction, a phenomenon not seen in eleven years of polling by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind™. According to the most recent statewide survey, 50% say the state is headed in the right direction, while 41% say it’s on the wrong track. However, public employees do disagree: 50% of public employee …

FDU Poll: Fox, MSNBC Don't Inform You Well

Says Sunday morning news shows seem to do the best keeping people informed

What channel do you surf to, when you want to get caught up on the news? According to the latest poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind, if it's Fox News or MSNBC, you might not be learning much. You're much better off with a Sunday morning news show or with NPR if you really want to know what's going on in the world, the poll concludes. See the full statement from FDU below, and take Patch's poll at the bottom of this post to let us know what you think. According to a follow-up survey by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind, NPR and Sunday morning political talk shows are the most informative news outlets, while exposure to partisan sources, such as Fox News and MSNBC, has a negative impact on people’s current events…

Oh, so many methodological criticisms of this study, at least as it is reported here. A threshold issue is how many people today get all of their news from so-called Main Stream Media of the type discussed here? There are many web sites which supplement/supplant MSM. With regard to the study itself, how do you distinguish between an issue on which someone was misinformed, and one that they didn't…   more ›

Poll: Stop Calling Politicians Jerks & Fascists

What's on your list of no-nos?

Just about no-one thinks it's OK to call a politican "numb-nuts." That's the finding from a recent Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll that asked not only whether it's OK for politicians to call each other names, but which names. Read on for the full statement from FDU. Most New Jersey voters say that politicians should avoid name-calling and be respectful of their opponents. According to the most recent poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind, 87% say politicians should lay off the name-calling. Just 10% say it’s OK for pols to make a strong point by calling their opponent a name. But given a choice of 14 names, not all names are equal: 23% of Garden State voters say calling an opponent “dishonest” is never …

If you are in a public position, or one of power, you should never use these words on another. You need to show a little class! It is sad how few people even know what that is anymore. I am a teacher and if I ever uttered some of the words on this list, I could lose my job! What types of role models and leaders are these people who use such words? What example are they leading for others? I …   more ›

FDU Poll: NJ Feels Better About Economy

But the stats still show, at best, cautious optimism.

The stats aren't great, but they're better than they have been. FDU's latest poll finds New Jerseyans at least a bit more optimistic about the economy than they have been when asked the same questions in the past. Still, 41 percent say they're worse off than they were a year ago—and only 32 percent say they're better off. But on some level, that's good news — when people were asked in 2011 how they were doing compared to 2010, the figures were even more discouraging. That trend follows throughout the poll—answers are sounding like "not great" where they used to sound more like "pretty awful." So, there's progress. Read FDU's full statement on its poll below, and take our Patch poll at the bottom of this post: According to the quarterly …

FDU Poll: Christie Popularity Still Strong in NJ

Favorable rating remains unchanged from October.

Headed into his annual State of the State address, New Jersey’s governor continues to turn in strong public approval numbers, according to the latest recent statewide poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind. According to the FDU poll, 53 percent of Garden State voters approve of the job Chris Christie is doing as governor, while 37 percent disapprove, a net advantage of 16 percentage points and virtually identical to his standing a year ago before his 2011 State of the State address. “That’s the way any office-holder wants to begin the new year,” said Peter Woolley, director of the poll. “But in this economic climate, many aren’t.” Even the recent toll hikes do not make a dent in the governor’s standing. Households that pay …

Poll: Is Local Produce the Best?

Garden Staters tend to enjoy their own bounty. Are you with the majority?

Garden State residents appear to prefer food that is "Jersey Fresh" when making their purchases. According to a recent poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind, more than nine in 10 New Jerseyans–94 percent, to be exact–say it is "very important" or "somewhat important" to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables when they are in season. Also, the percentage of individuals who have purchased Jersey Fresh produce from a farm stand or farmers market in the past three months was 87 percent, greater than the 83 percent who had purchased Jersey Fresh produce in a similar time frame in 2010.  Nine in 10 residents say they'd like to see more NJ fruits and vegetables served with public meals, which is greater than the 85 percent reported…

Video: FDU Poll Says Voters Split On Teachers Union

Also finds half of voters approve of job Christie is doing.

Voters throughout the state are nearly split in their opinions of the New Jersey Education Association, Fairleigh Dickinson University's latest PublicMind poll finds. Of those surveyed by FDU, 39 percent have a favorable opinion of the public teachers union, while 38% have an unfavorable opinion. But the poll also finds that a majority of voters in public-employee households (60 percent) have a favorable view of the NJEA and just a quarter have an unfavorable view (26 percent). Among all other voters, the NJEA runs behind, 32 percent favorable and 43 percent unfavorable. As a complement to the FDU poll, Patch asked voters throughout the state what they think of the teachers union. See the video attached to this article for their …

FDU Poll: Most NJ Residents Approve of Bear Hunt

Survey showed more than half agreed "if wildlife scientists conclude that bears are exceeding their recommended habitat limits and are destroying private property."

Most New Jersey residents approve of the upcoming bear hunt—at least if wildlife experts say the state has a bear population problem—according to the latest Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll. The poll asked voters if they'd approve of the bear hunt "if wildlife scientists conclude that bears are exceeding their recommended habitat limits and are destroying private property." It found 53 percent of those agreed, 36 percent disagreed, and 11 percent were unsure. A second version of the question—simply asking voters whether they approve or disapprove of a bear-hunting season, but without mentioning the opinion of wildlife experts—showed slightly less support for the hunt, but more approved than disapproved. FDU reports 49 …
