Two firefighters and a police officer were recognized for rescuing a woman from a house fire on Park Avenue.
Two Madison firefighters and a Madison police officer credited with saving a Madison resident from a burning home in November were honored last week at a dinner recognizing heroic actions by first responders in Morris County. Madison firefighters James Blair and Troy Pehowic received valor awards and borough Patrolman James Cavezza received a meritorious service award at the 200 Club of Morris County's 41st Annual Valor & Meritorious Awards Dinner at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany. The organization described the recipients' actions in an announcement about the event: Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician James A. Blair and Firefighter Troy N. The owner of a Park Avenue home that was destroyed by a fire in November is expected to stand trial for alleged housing violations at the multi-family residence. David Chiarolanzio and his attorney, Samuel DeAngelis, appeared as scheduled in Madison Joint Municipal Court Wednesday evening along with environmental health specialist Tamica Trotman of the Madison Health Department, who issued the summons in the case. DeAngelis told Judge Gary F. Troxell they were "far apart" in resolving the case on their own. The judge said he was not sure if the trial would be March 20 or another day. Blaze started in basement utility room, fire chief says.
A fire that destroyed a multi-family home at Park Avenue and Loveland Street in Madison two months ago has been ruled accidental and is believed to have started in a basement utility room around a furnace or chimney, the borough's fire chief said Wednesday. Fire Chief Lou DeRosa said fire official Capt. Edward Nunn and an insurance investigator reached the conclusion after continuing their investigation this week, after the burned home was torn down Monday. Investigators waited until the burned structure was torn down to complete their investigation because part of the first floor had collapsed into the basement during the fire, making it unsafe. YouTube video shows inferno in two-story building on Park Avenue on Saturday after a woman and her dog were rescued from it.
Video of the four-alarm fire that burned through a multi-family home at Park Avenue and Loveland Street on Saturday morning shows the entire front of the building engulfed in flames as the siding catches fire and, later, shooting from the roof. The video, titled "Madison, NJ 4th Alarm Fire 11-17-12," was uploaded to YouTube in two parts. The first part shows the inferno minutes after firefighters rescued a woman and her dog from the second floor. Thick smoke billows out of the home, as firefighters douse it with water. The second video shows firefighter continuing to battle the blaze as the roof catches fire. The fire was reported after 9 a.m. and the floors and part of the roof collapsed around 11 a.m.
