The board of trustees will consider whether or not to remove policy for non-union members.
NJ Transit on Monday proposed eliminating a policy that allows unlimited free travel on rail, light rail, and bus lines for the agency's non-union employees, according to NJT Spokeswoman Nancy Snyder. The policy, which has been in effect for 30 years, will be considered by the NJT Board of Directors at their meeting Monday, Oct. 15. If approved by the board, it will be subject to Gov. Chris Christie's veto period, Snyder said. The change would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2013, resulting in non-union employees and non-union retirees no longer being able to use the transit system free-of-charge for personal purposes, according to a press release from NJT. “Moving forward, NJ Transit must continue to sufficiently consider the interests of our …

Hydraulic fluid leaked near storm drain, driver taken to hospital with minor injuries.
A concrete truck headed toward Main Street in Madison on Friday morning crashed into the New Jersey Transit overpass at Kings Road and Green Village Road, apparently chipping the overpass and leaking hydraulic fluid near a storm drain. The driver, 50-year-old Pine Bush, N.Y., resident Howard Fisher, was taken to Morristown Medical Center with minor injuries, police said. The truck was traveling northbound on Green Village Road when the upper boom collided with the bridge around 10:40 a.m., damaging the pump and releasing hydraulic fluid, Madison Police Lt. Darren Dachisen said. Fisher was cited for careless driving, Dachisen said. A New Jersey Transit spokeswoman said rail service was not affected by the accident. A lift on top of the …

Safety initiative comes after death of three teenagers in October
A variety of safety measures will sweep New Jersey Transit lines within the next year or so, transportation officials announced Wednesday, in an effort to reduce the number of accidental train deaths across the state. The safety improvements, which include improved signage, warning systems and educational programs, are the result of a three-month study by the Safety Along Railroads Leadership Oversight Committee, formed in wake of the deaths of three teenagers by New Jersey Transit trains last October. "We are really energized about this with a sense of purpose to move forward from the sorrow and grief of each railroad fatality," said James Simpson, commissioner of New Jersey Department of Transportation, at a press conference Wednesday at…

Bus schedule service enables riders to obtain information via cell phone text message.
In today's digital age, where it's not uncommon to see more people talking or texting into phones than talking to each other, it makes sense that technology could be used to make things like bus travel easier and more convenient. That was the thinking of New Jersey Transit, which, on Dec. 16, unveiled the first "MyBus" sign in Morris County, at the Morristown Train Station. This is only the second MyBus sign unveiled, with the first installed in November in Atlantic County. The MyBus program, which is already in place at over 19,000 bus stops in New Jersey–with full signage expected to be installed by the end of next year–assigns a number to each stop. By dialing "69287" ("MyBus") on phones with SMS text messaging service, then inputting …
