Dodgers blitz Morris Catholic behind 3-point barrage.
DENVILLE – The Madison High School boys basketball team had won its last three games in relatively comfortable fashion, but not because the Dodgers were shooting the ball particularly well. The unbeaten squad was a combined 6-for-38 from 3-point range, dating back to the Jan. 26 win at Mountain Lakes. Thursday night, Madison broke out of that slump in a big way, hitting nine of 16 3-pointers and cruising to a 73-49 win at NJAC-Independence rival Morris Catholic. Four Dodgers scored in double figures, led by Jake Meister's 17. The junior guard also led Madison with eight rebounds. Matt Gilbert and Robbie Savacool added 16 points apiece. "We had some great ball movement, and we just got hot," Savacool said. "The shots were dropping for us, …

Defense locks down Pequannock for 15th straight win.
This year's Madison High School boys basketball team has a certain swagger, evident in both their on-court success, and their postgame remarks. Case in point: Madison's 51-42 comeback victory over Pequannock Tuesday afternoon at Madison High School. The Dodgers rebounded from a 10-point first-half deficit, dominating the game's final 18 minutes after a lackluster first half. Matt McHale led Madison with 13 points, while Aaron Fant added 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Madison (15-0, 8-0 NJAC-Independence) looked every bit the confident, talented team that made it unbeaten into the season's final month, disposing of a Pequannock team that took them to the wire back on Jan. 5 in Pequannock. "They wanted it more than we did in the …

Fant scores 19 as Dodgers hold off Parsippany.
It was a win the Madison High School boys basketball team would probably like to forget. But it's highly unlikely head coach Bill Librera will let them. Aaron Fant scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Dodgers improved to 14-0 with a lethargic 52-43 victory over Parsippany at Madison High School Thursday. "We didn't play well," Fant said. "We were just a little slow today. We know we have to pick up the intensity." Madison also improved to 7-0 in Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference-Independence play, but Librera–who was visibly frustrated with his team's play numerous times during the game–thinks the Dodgers can take away more than just a lackluster win. "This is a teachable moment," Librera said. "Sometimes, you get caught up…

Dodgers surpass win total from last season with victory over Mountain Lakes.
MOUNTAIN LAKES – After opening the season with 12 straight wins, the Madison High School boys basketball team knows it is a high-profile target of every other Morris County team. But the Dodgers keep confidently going about their business, and the wins keep coming. Jake Meister finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists to lead Madison to a chippy 53-30 win over Mountain Lakes Tuesday afternoon at Mountain Lakes High School. Aaron Fant added 13 points and four assists for the Dodgers (13-0), which have now won more games than they did all of last season. Madison finished the 2008-09 campaign 12-14. Madison led by just five points midway through the third quarter before pulling away with a smothering 1-3-1 zone defensive effort…

Dodgers set to prove last year's MCT final appearance was no fluke.
Perfection wasn't enough to earn the Madison High School boys basketball team the No. 1 seed in the 2010 Morris County Tournament. But the Dodgers will settle for a chance to earn the top spot on the court. Madison (12-0) was seeded third in the 26-team tournament at the coaches' meeting at Parsippany Hills High School Sunday afternoon. The high seed means the Dodgers advance past this weekend's preliminary round of the tournament via a bye. Madison hosts the winner of the Morris Hills-Mount Olive game Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. "Seeding meetings don't guarantee anything," said Madison head coach Bill Librera. "We're eager to get started and get out on the court." Last season, of course, the Dodgers were seeded 10th and, after a wild series of …

Aaron Fant helps lead the Dodgers to their twelfth victory.
The Madison High School boys basketball team defeated the Morris Hills Scarlet Knights on Saturday night, 56-45, in a game that looked close until the end of the second quarter. Madison, a Group II school, has now defeated two teams in larger groups: Group IV Livingston, whom the Dodgers defeated last Saturday, and Group III Morris Hills. With the win, the Dodgers remain perfect this season and improve to 12-0. "We knew it would be a good game because they are a Group III school," said Aaron Fant, one of Madison's leading scorers in Saturday night's game. The Dodgers were plagued by fouls early in the game, giving up five points to free throws in the first three minutes of the game, while only scoring two on a Jake Meister lay-up in the …

Balanced scoring, defense lead Dodgers to easy win over Arts.
When starting guard Mike Haughey came off the court with 2:52 to play Wednesday, it represented something different for the Madison High School boys basketball team. For the first time since their season-opening win over Kittatinny Dec. 19, all five Madison starters could end the game on the bench, a win safely secured long ago. Aaron Fant scored 14 points and dished out five assists as Madison cruised to an easy 61-45 non-conference win over the Jaguars at Madison High School. Fant was one of four players in double-figures for Madison (10-0), which equalled the 2005-06 team's season-opening unbeaten streak, the school's longest in recent memory. Madison had won its last eight games by eight points or fewer, but this win came much easier …

Dodgers hold off comeback from rival Cougars to reach 8-0.
MADISON – Mike Haughey has turned out to be a pleasant surprise for the Madison High School boys basketball team. In his first year as a varsity player, he's stepped up and made some of the biggest shots in Madison's season-opening unbeaten run. Haughey, making his third start, led Madison with 16 points as the Dodgers upended rival Chatham, 49-47, Thursday night at Madison High School to improve to 8-0. The Dodgers (8-0, 5-0 NJAC-Independence) led by as many as 11, but Chatham pulled within three on Jonathan Bernstein's 3-pointer with 9.5 seconds left. At that point, Robbie Savacool–returning to the lineup after missing the previous two games–hit the second of two free throws to give Madison a two-possession lead. Bernstein made a layup …

Dodgers improve to 7-0 after knocking off previously-unbeaten Hanover Park in clash of NJAC-Independence titans.
MADISON – Aaron Fant knew the ball was coming his way. And he knew what he needed to do to keep Madison's perfect record intact. "Coach called a double-screen to get me free," Madison's junior point guard said. "If they came to double me, I was going to pass to Jake (Meister). If not, I had to get to the rim." "They" were NJAC-Independence Division rival Hanover Park, one of the other two remaining unbeaten boys basketball teams in Morris County. The Hornets trailed by 13 with 3:39 to play in regulation, but forced overtime on John Burbella's corner 3-pointer as time expired. Madison had not made a field goal since the 7:01 mark of the fourth quarter. And now Hanover Park led, 55-53, with 4.5 seconds left in the first overtime period. In …

Five players do all the scoring in NJAC-Independence victory.
The Madison High School boys basketball team is living dangerously this season. But as long as the wins keep piling up, the Dodgers won't complain. Madison defeated Morris Catholic, 58-51, in an NJAC-Independence Division game Thursday to keep their 2009-10 record perfect. Aaron Fant led all scorers with 17 points for Madison (6-0, 3-0), which won its fifth straight game by eight points or less. "We hate to lose more than we like to win," said junior forward Matt McHale, who scored 11 and grabbed five rebounds. The Dodgers did it with a shortened rotation and a greater reliance on starters Fant, McHale and Jake Meister (15 points, seven rebounds). But minus a starter, the Dodgers went about their business in usual fashion, winning with …
