The Rotary Family Festival, a four-day fundraising carnival next to the New York Jets training center, returns this year starting May 31, according to a news release from Carmela Moeller of the Rotary Club of Madison. It will feature food, music, children's activities and fireworks, according to the announcement, below. The Rotary Club of Madison inducted Joseph T. Smith as it president for 2011-12 on June 8 at theb organization's annual Installation Dinner at Mayfair Farms in West Orange. As the 89th President, Smith succeeds Ellsworth Havens. The event also recognized 13 recipients of the Paul Harris Fellow Awards: Joe Adamczyk (posthumously), Sarah Bittner, Tom Bintinger, Lois Bhatt, Bob Chapman, Jack Conley, Eileen (Missy) Durham, Rocco Iossa, Mara Johnson, Patricia Miller, William Odell, Deborah Starker, and William Van Ryzin. Service Above Self awards were presented to Tom Uhlman and Rocco Iossa. Also recognized were incoming and outgoing officers of Madison High School's Interact Club. Charity event raises awareness of continued need in disaster-stricken country.
The Madison Rotary Club sponsored a fundraiser Wednesday night at the Morris Museum to assist the people of Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March. A Japanese drummer sounded the gathering and as the guests entered the museum, they were greeted by women dressed in traditional kimonos. In attendence were Ambassador and Consul General of Japan in New York Shigeyuki Hiroki and Motoatsu Sakurai, president of the Japan Society and the former president of Mitsubishi's American subsidiary. The event was filled with talented koto players and a husband and wife jazz duet, and included a $10,000 donation from NJ Unites to Help Japan, a fundraiser held in April in Madison.

The Rotary Club of Madison will again hold its popular community Shred-It Day, Saturday, April 30, in the parking lot of Madison's Provident Bank, 98 Main Street, from 2 - 5 p.m. The public is invited to bring their unwanted personal documents no longer necessary to keep but in need of secure shredding. The process can be observed on the truck-mounted shredder from Shred-It Inc. of Parsippany, the group said. The cost is $5 per box. "In view of Earth Day, this project is the perfect way to be a friend to the environment...all shredded papers will be recycled into other paper products," the Rotarty said in a release. The Madison Rotary Club is inviting non-profit organizations in the area to apply for a grant from the civic and charitable organization. Application criteria can be found on the Rotary's website. The deadline for applications is March 1. The Rotary in a release said that it has been providing modest financial support by way of grants and sponsorships to many non-profit organizations in the Madison area for over 85 years. The focus of the charitable distribution and granting activities is to provide financial support to organizations serving the public through humanitarian efforts, education, and health resource services to seniors and children, and arts-related activities. In its ninth year, event will be hosted at Fairleigh Dickinson on Monday.
Over 30 restaurants are participating in this year's edition of Taste of Madison, which will be held on Monday night from 7 - 9 in the Ferguson Recreation Center at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Those attending the event, which is in its ninth year, will be able to sample signature dishes from the participating borough restuarants. Four local wine shops will offer wines and spirits to go with the meals. Other treats, like tricky trays and a silent auction, will be held for items, some of which are valued at $1,000 or more.
