Roses, Award Presented to Fox Attack Victims

John Hamilton received the Mayor's Award for heroic effort and Caroline Malia, who graduates from FDU Tuesday, was given roses.

Caroline Malia, the Fairleigh Dickinson University student who was attacked by a rabid fox less than two weeks ago, and John Hamilton, the next-door neighbor who ran outside and grabbed the fox by the neck to get the fox off of her, were recognized at the Borough Council meeting on Monday. Mayor Bob Conley presented Hamilton with the Mayor's Award "for heroic effort on behalf of the residents of Madison" and Malia was given roses. Malia graduates from FDU Tuesday. Her family from New Hampshire is in New Jersey for the graduation and they were at the presentation on Monday at Hartley Dodge Memorial. State Veterinarian: Madison Fox Attack 'Random'

An attack such as the one on Longview Avenue "happens rarely," Dr. Colin Campbell said.

A red fox that bit two people on Thursday morning in Madison tested positive for rabies, which means it was infected by another mammal with rabies and indicates there is rabies activity in the area. That's a good reason to check the rabies vaccination status of pets, contain free roaming pets and remind people if they see animals acting strangely or aggressively they should call authorities. But Deputy State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Colin Campbell said the attack was a "random" event, and there's nothing particularly risky about walking down the streets of Madison. Rabies, a disease caused by a virus found in the saliva of rabid animals, has been an issue in New Jersey animals, particularly in suburban areas, since 1989, he said. …

Update: Fox That Attacked People Was Rabid

State rabies lab notifies Health Department; borough posts tips to protect families and pets.

The state rabies lab on Friday informed the Madison Health Department the fox that attacked two people Thursday morning was rabid, according to an announcement on RoseNet.org. The babysitter and neighbor who were bit by the fox received their first round of the rabies vaccination that same day. Another resident who believes the same fox is the one that scratched her dog's nose hours before the other incident said her dog's rabies vaccinations were up-to-date, and the pet received a rabies booster shot Thursday. The announcement says residents with outdoor pets should carefully check for any signs of confrontation with a wild animal. According to the announcement, The State Rabies lab has informed the Madison Health Department that the fox …

Resident: Fox Scratched Dog's Nose Hours Before

Nancy O'Brien believes fox that bit babysitter was the same one that gave her dog a bloody nose.

Nancy O'Brien believes the fox that was shot and killed after attacking a babysitter on Longview Avenue on Thursday morning was the same one that gave her dog a bloody nose hours before. Before a fox attacked a 23-year-old babysitter around 9:10 a.m. Thursday, a fox approached O'Brien's dog, Fenway, in the fenced-in backyard of their Delbarton Drive home around 5:45 a.m., she said. O'Brien believes the fox, after the altercation, might have followed a path from the end of Delbarton Drive through Memorial Park to Rosedale Avenue, which is near where the other attack occurred. O'Brien and her partner, Gina, ran outside after they heard Fenway barking viciously and found her face-to-face with a fox that was swiping at her, she said. The …

Babysitter: Fox Attacked After Told to 'Shoo'

Two stitches for neighbor who was working from home and came to the rescue.

Longview Avenue is a street where young kids often play outside, so, in that sense, Caroline Malia is grateful the fox that attacked her Thursday morning grabbed a hold of her leg and not one of a child. Malia, a 23-year-old Fairleigh Dickinson University student, babysat a 16-month-old girl on the street for the past year and, on Thursday morning, went to see the girl one more time before leaving to finish her last two weeks of school before graduating. As she was at the door, an animal she initially thought was a large cat approached her on the porch. Without making any movements, she told the animal, "shoo." The moment she said it, the animal bit her leg and would not stop attacking her, Malia said in an interview Thursday night. Malia …

Now will the health insurance cover the Rabies shots? BCBS no, just the ER visit. Watch your bill arrive from Morristown Hospital, $5-$8000 that is not covered by insurance. Don't believe it? Google it. They will give you a flu shot or Tetanus to prevent disease, but Rabies? No.   more ›

How about we have a little culling? .22lr would work fine on those varmints. Pop, right in the eye. Although if a fox or something came after one of me or mine, I'd use 12 gauge, just to watch that puppy splatter. But seriously, this shit scares me. Is this what new jersey has come to? We depend on the police to save us from a fox? Get a grip people, shoot it yourself, learn a little personal …   more ›
