Dodgers upend Bernards, 5-1, behind Perry's hat trick.
MORRISTOWN – Junior forward Lou Cecala said that perhaps the Madison High School hockey team took 28th-seeded Bernards too lightly prior to the teams' NJSIAA Public B second-round game Wednesday afternoon. It certainly appeared that way for about the first period and a half. But the Dodgers the game's final four goals to cruise to a 5-1 win over the Mountaineers at Mennen Arena. Brett Perry (three goals) and Cecala accounted for all the scoring for Madison, who extended their unbeaten streak to eight games. Freshman goalie Grant Perry stopped 23 shots. "We knew we came off a big win against Mahwah (in the first round of the tournament)," Cecala said. "We weren't cocky, but I think we were semi-overlooking them. It's the wrong mentality to …

Late win by Carr seals victory for Dodgers.
A televised match on MSG Varsity between the Madison High School wrestling team and Bound Brook High School lived up to the billing as a late victory by 189-pounder Ed Carr secured a hard fought 38-28 victory for the Dodgers. "Eddie Carr was a huge surprise," Madison head coach Steve Healey said. "Eddie Carr's headlock ... one more time. We'll take it." The match started with Madison using Jack Anzul at 215-pounds. Normally, Anzul would be at either 171-pounds or 189-pounds but Healey said, "we thought we had a better chance with Anzul to win that match or keep it close. Just on styles, we decided to (go with Anzul)." Well, the coach was right as Anzul, who was losing 2-0 in the second period, caught Frank Gianotti in a headlock, securing …

Defense locks down Pequannock for 15th straight win.
This year's Madison High School boys basketball team has a certain swagger, evident in both their on-court success, and their postgame remarks. Case in point: Madison's 51-42 comeback victory over Pequannock Tuesday afternoon at Madison High School. The Dodgers rebounded from a 10-point first-half deficit, dominating the game's final 18 minutes after a lackluster first half. Matt McHale led Madison with 13 points, while Aaron Fant added 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Madison (15-0, 8-0 NJAC-Independence) looked every bit the confident, talented team that made it unbeaten into the season's final month, disposing of a Pequannock team that took them to the wire back on Jan. 5 in Pequannock. "They wanted it more than we did in the …

Golden Panthers' Samantha Tabakman proves to be unstoppable.
The Madison High School girls basketball team could not contain Samantha Tabakman of Pequannock on Tuesday afternoon, as she led her Panthers to a 57-38 victory over the Dodgers. Tabakman, a sophomore, scored 33 points in the game. "She is a great basketball player. We had a hard time stopping her," said senior Evan Foulsham of Madison. Pequannock is now 13-2 on the season, with one of their two losses coming against Madison earlier this season. "We held her (Tabakman) to 11 last time, but this time we couldn't do anything," said Madison head coach Stephen Finkelstein. "For us to give up 33 points to any one player is devastating." The Golden Panthers established themselves early, scoring 11 unanswered points to start the game. It took …

Anton scores two, Maxwell adds goal and two assists as Dodgers fall to out-of-conference foe.
MORRISTOWN – The Madison High School ice hockey team is wrapping up its regular season, and that means it's time to start taking peeks into its playoff future. The Dodgers did just that Sunday night at Mennen Arena, taking on Union County power Governor Livingston. And though the Dodgers fell to the Highlanders, 7-5, Madison coach Dave Hansen couldn't be too upset with his team's effort. "We've got the end of our regular season coming up," Hansen said. "If we play like we did tonight against the teams in our league, we're going to be fine." Teddy Udelsman scored five goals for Governor Livingston (11-5-2), the current leader of the Union County Ice Hockey League, while Nick Sousa tallied seven assists. Brett Anton scored two goals for …

Davis, Colwell lead Dodgers.
After Friday's pre-quarterfinal round, Madison wrestling head coach Steve Healey proclaimed, "We're going to come in focused tomorrow and get the job done." Well his wrestlers got the point as three of the five that advanced to Saturday's round wrestled in the finals, two taking home Morris County titles. Starting things off was sophomore 103-pounder Patsy Davis. Davis, who defeated No. 1 seed Gennaro Cuccolo of Hanover Park in the semifinal round, faced fellow sophomore Jan Rosenberg of Morris Knolls in the finals. After a scoreless first period, the second showed much of the same as Rosenberg took the bottom position but did nothing from there. Davis tried his best to turn his opponent with a ball and chain, but was unsuccessful as the …

The Madison girls fall to Kinnelon at home, but the Dodgers support breast cancer as part of the Morris County Tournament's "Shoot for a Cure"
The Madison High School girls basketball team took the court against Kinnelon as part of the Morris County tournament's "Shoot for a Cure." After a down-to-the-wire struggle, the Dodgers fell to the Colts by a score of 45-39. Kinnelon took it to the Dodgers off the opening whistle. They established a quick-paced, pass-heavy offense and their size advantage under the hoop. The visitors went on a 10-0 run in the first quarter that was only stopped by Mackenzie Elli's layup less than a minute before the buzzer. Though the Dodgers got off to a rocky start, they put points on the board in the second quarter as they brought a sense of urgency back to their play. Another Ellis layup started the scoring for Madison, and she got the ball to …
Caroline Brennan leads Madison at County Championships.
The Madison High School girls swim team was not among the top finishing teams on Saturday at the Morris County Championships, but it had some strong individual performances, including a county record-breaking finish in the 400-meter freestyle event for junior Caroline Brennan. Madison took ninth overall at the meet out of 20. The Madison girls struggled in the first event, but in the second girls event of the day Brennan took first in the 200 SC meter freestyle with a time of 2:12.35, earning 16 points for the Dodgers. Courtney McKinnon took sixth with a time of 2:15.80 in the event, earning an additional nine points for Madison. "I knew I was seeded number one, but I didn't want to let it get to my head. Anyone in that event could have …
Four of the five wins come by pin for Dodgers.
The Madison Dodgers wrestled well on Day 1 of the Morris County Tournament as five grapplers moved on to the pre-quarterfinal round, to be held Saturday morning at Mount Olive High School. Leading the way was sophomore Patsy Davis, who has spent the majority of the year at 112-pounds but wrestled at 103-pounds for the tournament. Davis–seeded fourth–made quick work of his opponent in his lone match of the day as he pinned Chatham's Justin Engel in 1:39 of the first period. Davis will face Max Rogers of Delbarton in his quarterfinal match tomorrow morning. At 145-pounds senior Ryan Colwell, aiming for his second ever county title, was the only Dodger to receive a number one seed. Colwell started things off the right way as he pinned Mount …

Fant scores 19 as Dodgers hold off Parsippany.
It was a win the Madison High School boys basketball team would probably like to forget. But it's highly unlikely head coach Bill Librera will let them. Aaron Fant scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Dodgers improved to 14-0 with a lethargic 52-43 victory over Parsippany at Madison High School Thursday. "We didn't play well," Fant said. "We were just a little slow today. We know we have to pick up the intensity." Madison also improved to 7-0 in Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference-Independence play, but Librera–who was visibly frustrated with his team's play numerous times during the game–thinks the Dodgers can take away more than just a lackluster win. "This is a teachable moment," Librera said. "Sometimes, you get caught up…
