One in 8 American women and 1 in 1,000 American men will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. It’s estimated that more than 2 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer and fight for their lives each year. Breast cancer is difficult to face alone—for both patients and their loved ones. To help in the battle, there are a number of local resources and support groups: The Cancer Instutute of NJ (CINJ) in cooperation with Saint Peter's University Hospital holds a support group at 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month at CINJ, 195 Little Albany St., New Brunswick. One meeting each month is an open discussion and the second meeting focuses on a specific topic with a guest speaker. For more …

Local store promotes breast cancer awareness, raises funds for American Cancer Society.
Dress Barn is asking to help "Paint The Country Pink" to recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Florham Park store is one of more than 800 locations across the country working to help raise money for the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research. Through the month of October, Dress Barn will donate $1 to the American Cancer Society for each person who "paints" the country pink on PaintTheCountryPink.com. The website goes live Monday and will have the map of the country and a paintbrush for visitors to "paint" a location. The more people participate, the pinker the country gets and the more the store donates. Dress Barn will donate up to $100,000. The message is to let cancer victims know "you are not alone—we will …

"If you can show 40 percent of breast cancer is caused by a virus, you could start to take that off the table," said the Madison resident. "Reducing the incidents of breast cancer by 40 percent is going to save a ton of money, much more than trying to convince women to exercise or to stop drinking alcohol." Ruddy is a breast cancer surgeon whose private practice is located at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville, where she had been the …
