Day Tripper: Out of Town, But In Reach

You Can Rock and Bowl at Asbury Lanes

Bowling alley/music club mixes it up for fun on the Jersey Shore.

We’ve been to museums, parks and art galleries, taken spooky walking tours and visited parks on elevated train tracks. We’ve explored Pompeii and Wildwood and played some classic video games, so this week, we’re headed to the bowling alley. Yes, the bowling alley. Only this isn’t the one you may recall from your youth where the alleys smelled of cigar smoke drifting from the lounge, the pool tables reeked of old spilled beer, and the food concessions provided pretzels that could also be classified as deadly weapons. Asbury Lanes, located on 209 4th St., does offer strikes and spares for your bowling needs, but the venue is also a club specializing in indie, punk and rockabilly bands. The place came highly recommended from the band The …

Madison Bowlers Continue Impressive Start

2-1 win over Butler gives Dodgers 17 points this season.

Led by a team high 255 score from freshman Dre Dobson, the Madison High School bowling team was able to stop Butler High School, 2-1, on Tuesday at Rockaway Lanes in Rockaway. Dobson, who has averaged 160 this season, came out of nowhere in his first game, recording seven strikes on his way to a 255. Dobson would follow up his outstanding game with scores of 138 and 128 in his final two games. "It feels pretty good," Dobson said after the win. "I didn't expect it, so it definitely feels pretty good." Also leading Madison was senior captain Conner Smith who, like Dobson, delivered his best score of 207 in his first game. Smith would follow up with scores of 148 and 136, helping lead Madison to yet another win in 2011. "Great," head coach …

Winter Sports Previews: Madison High School Bowling Team

Standout Jason Maulbeck and two other seniors lead a relatively inexperienced squad in its new conference.

"Something about throwing the ball at pins is fun," Jason Maulbeck said before he took his turn at Madison Plaza Lanes. He is the standout on the Madison High School varsity bowling team, and the leader of the squad.  His enjoyment of the sport is infectious – he high-fives teammates after his strikes and spares, and they mention him when asked about their goals. He, along with fellow seniors Lance Carriere and Harrison Mills, hope to lead the young team on a win streak following a disappointing 0-3 start. "I've loved it my entire life," Maulbeck said. He ought to, as bowling is a seven day part of his life.  Aside from hitting the lanes with his Dodgers teammates twice a week, he bowls in three other leagues. "At this point, I don't have …

Madison Bowlers Fall to Chatham

Dodgers' Maulbeck averages 192 in three-game match

ROCKAWAY TWP. – The best bowler in Tuesday’s Madison-Chatham NJAC matchup wore a maroon and yellow shirt. But it was the team in the blue shirts that came out on top. Madison’s Jason Maulbeck bowled a 576 in the three-game match, but his efforts were not enough to lift the Dodgers to a win over the rival Cougars. Chatham swept all three games by scores of 752-676, 754-698 and 842-592. The Cougars’ depth proved too much for Madison – all five Chatham bowlers averaged at least 139 pins per game, while only two Dodgers could meet that target. Still, it was Maulbeck, who bowled a 296 in the Bishop Ahr Classic in North Brunswick Sunday , who was the standout performer of the match. Maulbeck’s powerful, fast bowling resulted in multiple runs of …
