Democrats win three-year seats on the governing body.
Madison voters elected Democrats Astri Baillie and Benjamin Wolkowitz to three-year seats on the Madison Borough Council, beating Republicans John Hoover and Carmen Pico, according to unofficial results. Preliminary results, not counting provisional ballots, showed Baillie, a former councilwoman, and Wolkowitz, receiving 3,149 and 3,123 votes, respectively. Hoover and Pico received 2,854 and 2,728 votes, respectively. "I'd like to thank the people of Madison for their support, and I look forward to working on behalf of everyone in Madison," Wolkowitz said. League of Women Voters forum draws 60 attendees.
Approximately 60 people attended a forum for Madison Borough Council candidates Tuesday evening at the Madison Community House to hear the four candidates give statements and field audience members' questions. Two three-year seats are up for vote, with Democrats Astri Baillie, a former councilwoman, and Ben Wolkowitz running against GOP nominees Board of Health President John Hoover and Carmen Pico. The event was hosted and moderated by the League of Women Voters, with audience members submitting questions about electric rates, taxes, Health Department contracts and the dismissal and reinstatement of Madison's borough administrator earlier in the year. Ben Wolkowitz and Astri Baillie, candidates for Borough Council, have been investigating how economic pressures felt throughout our state are forcing municipalities to consider different ways of providing services. The four Madison Borough Council candidates are scheduled to participate in a forum Tuesday evening at the Madison Community House, the League of Women Voters of Morristown Area announced. The format for the event will include opening and closing statements by the candidates and written and oral questions submitted by the audience members, according to a League news release. Our joint campaign for Borough Council aims at achieving the objective of balancing the delivery of services our residents expect while avoiding undue increases in their tax burden. Madison’s continuing decline in services and infrastructure repairs and annually increasing property taxes is unsustainable and unfair to our residents. Yet the Council has not discussed a plan to reverse these trends nor has it produced a sensible budget we can all understand. Republican Borough Council candidate John F. Hoover, who waged a successful write-in campaign in Tuesday's GOP primary to join Councilman Don Links on the ticket for the general election in November thanked his supporters in a statement Wednesday, while Democratic candidate Ben Wolkowitz, who is running with former Councilwoman Astri Baillie, said Madison will have a clear choice to make come November.
