Ben Wolkowitz and Astri Baillie, candidates for Borough Council, have been investigating how economic pressures felt throughout our state are forcing municipalities to consider different ways of providing services. In a prepared press release, they stated, “Some municipalities have instituted or are considering complete town-wide consolidation of municipal services. Princeton has been a high visibility case where the Township and the Borough, previously independent municipalities, merged into a single entity.” Wolkowitz and Baillie are not in favor of such a wholesale move for Madison; however they view service sharing and purchasing as potentially viable alternatives to providing everything for itself. The candidates went on to state: “…

In a prepared statement, candidates for Borough Council Astri Baillie and Ben Wolkowitz describe how the application of technology designed to address environmental issues could generate significant cost savings for Madison. The candidates stated: “We both strongly believe that working to save our environment is in everyone’s best interest; however, we also realize that not everyone shares this view. But we think that everyone likes to save money, and through our involvement, we have learned of significant opportunities for towns to reduce costs while improving the environment. Reducing the cost of running the borough is a first priority for us and will be on the top of our list of things to do if elected.” Wolkowitz added that, “The …

In a prepared statement, Astri Baillie, candidate for Borough Council, calls for a restoration of open government with accountability, consensus, and bipartisan cooperation. Madison is a great place to live. I grew up in Madison, attended its public schools, graduated from Drew University, and raised my family here. I have also served my home town for twenty-four years as a member of Council, the Planning Board, and the Zoning Board of Adjustment. I am also a past President of the Madison League of Women Voters, a Trustee of the Great Swamp Watershed Association, Trustee and Secretary of the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts, and a Board Member of the Madison Area YMCA. When I first ran for the Borough Council in 2001, I stated that …

In a prepared statement, candidates for Borough Council Astri Baillie and Ben Wolkowitz call for the initiation of strategic planning for the borough government. People who choose Madison as their home do so because they recognize what a special place Madison is. Everyone wants to reside in a town that provides a safe place to live and raise a family. We all want good schools, good services, and good recreation. Madison has all these assets and more; however it will take careful planning, judgment and work to ensure that these assets evolve in the future, and at a price our residents can afford. These days we are all especially conscious of value, making sure that our money is well spent. One method of contributing to doing just that is …

Candidates for Borough Council Astri Baillie and Ben Wolkowitz released the following announcement outlining their objectives for borough government. Our joint campaign for Borough Council aims at achieving the objective of balancing the delivery of services our residents expect while avoiding undue increases in their tax burden. Madison’s continuing decline in services and infrastructure repairs and annually increasing property taxes is unsustainable and unfair to our residents. Yet the Council has not discussed a plan to reverse these trends nor has it produced a sensible budget we can all understand. Unfortunately, the way the Council has handled the budget and financial planning over the past few years is not improving the situation…

Board of Health President John Hoover will join Councilman Don Links on the ballot as the Republican nominees for two three-year Borough Council seats up for vote in November, according to preliminary primary election results Tuesday night. Links was the only Republican to file for the primary by the deadline, but Hoover and then Carmen Pico subsequently declared they would be waging write-in campaigns in an effort to get on the ballot for the general election. With mail-in and provisional ballots not yet counted, Links had 499 votes, Hoover 109 and Pico 71. Baillie received 313 votes and …
