Democrats win three-year seats on the governing body.

Madison voters elected Democrats Astri Baillie and Benjamin Wolkowitz to three-year seats on the Madison Borough Council, beating Republicans John Hoover and Carmen Pico, according to unofficial results. Preliminary results, not counting provisional ballots, showed Baillie, a former councilwoman, and Wolkowitz, receiving 3,149 and 3,123 votes, respectively. Hoover and Pico received 2,854 and 2,728 votes, respectively. "I'd like to thank the people of Madison for their support, and I look forward to working on behalf of everyone in Madison," Wolkowitz said. VIDEO: Candidates Square Off on Electric Rates, Health Department, BA Dismissal

League of Women Voters forum draws 60 attendees.

Approximately 60 people attended a forum for Madison Borough Council candidates Tuesday evening at the Madison Community House to hear the four candidates give statements and field audience members' questions. Two three-year seats are up for vote, with Democrats Astri Baillie, a former councilwoman, and Ben Wolkowitz running against GOP nominees Board of Health President John Hoover and Carmen Pico. The event was hosted and moderated by the League of Women Voters, with audience members submitting questions about electric rates, taxes, Health Department contracts and the dismissal and reinstatement of Madison's borough administrator earlier in the year. Dem Candidates: Shared Services Can Work, But Need Review

Statement from Ben Wolkowitz and Astri Baillie questions Health Department, touts joint court.

Ben Wolkowitz and Astri Baillie, candidates for Borough Council, have been investigating how economic pressures felt throughout our state are forcing municipalities to consider different ways of providing services. In a prepared press release, they stated, “Some municipalities have instituted or are considering complete town-wide consolidation of municipal services. Princeton has been a high visibility case where the Township and the Borough, previously independent municipalities, merged into a single entity.” Wolkowitz and Baillie are not in favor of such a wholesale move for Madison; however they view service sharing and purchasing as potentially viable alternatives to providing everything for itself. The candidates went on to state: “…

Green Initiatives Can Save Money, Dem Candidates Say

Democratic candidates for Borough Council Astri Baillie and Ben Wolkowitz cite solar power and industrial composters as possible cost savers worth pursuing.

In a prepared statement, candidates for Borough Council Astri Baillie and Ben Wolkowitz describe how the application of technology designed to address environmental issues could generate significant cost savings for Madison. The candidates stated: “We both strongly believe that working to save our environment is in everyone’s best interest; however, we also realize that not everyone shares this view. But we think that everyone likes to save money, and through our involvement, we have learned of significant opportunities for towns to reduce costs while improving the environment. Reducing the cost of running the borough is a first priority for us and will be on the top of our list of things to do if elected.” Wolkowitz added that, “The …

Great idea, would probably save us all a few pennies each. Republicans promise to cut electric rates by 10%, which would be real savings. What say Baillie and Wolkowitz?? One question for the "Green" team - If solar panels are such a great idea for the environment, how come Ms. Baillie didn't push to change the way Madison Electric purchases electricity from residents who have them installed? …   more ›

The Truth Squad will be represented. Glad to see you have been given your marching orders for the final two weeks - spread the health department meme far and wide. It's a shame Astri has her hit squad out trashing the good work of the Board of Health. But it does show that all the bipartisan, kinder/gentler Madison council she's been spewing is just more politician BS to get elected. So what we …   more ›

Candidate Baillie Calls for a Restoration of Bipartisan Government

'The issues facing this town are neither Democratic nor Republican; they are Madison issues,' Astri Baillie says.

In a prepared statement, Astri Baillie, candidate for Borough Council, calls for a restoration of open government with accountability, consensus, and bipartisan cooperation. Madison is a great place to live.  I grew up in Madison, attended its public schools, graduated from Drew University, and raised my family here.  I have also served my home town for twenty-four years as a member of Council, the Planning Board, and the Zoning Board of Adjustment. I am also a past President of the Madison League of Women Voters, a Trustee of the Great Swamp Watershed Association, Trustee and Secretary of the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts, and a Board Member of the Madison Area YMCA.  When I first ran for the Borough Council in 2001, I stated that …

Madison Needs Strategic Planning, Candidates Say

Recent votes 'point to the lack of a coherent strategic plan for our town,' Borough Council candidates Astri Baillie and Ben Wolkowitz said in a prepared statement.

In a prepared statement, candidates for Borough Council Astri Baillie and Ben Wolkowitz call for the initiation of strategic planning for the borough government.  People who choose Madison as their home do so because they recognize what a special place Madison is. Everyone wants to reside in a town that provides a safe place to live and raise a family.  We all want good schools, good services, and good recreation. Madison has all these assets and more; however it will take careful planning, judgment and work to ensure that these assets evolve in the future, and at a price our residents can afford. These days we are all especially conscious of value, making sure that our money is well spent. One method of contributing to doing just that is …

Candidates Baillie and Wolkowitz Outline Objectives

Democratic candidates for Madison Borough Council say they aim to deliver services that residents expect while avoiding undue increases in their tax burden.

Candidates for Borough Council Astri Baillie and Ben Wolkowitz released the following announcement outlining their objectives for borough government. Our joint campaign for Borough Council aims at achieving the objective of balancing the delivery of services our residents expect while avoiding undue increases in their tax burden.  Madison’s continuing decline in services and infrastructure repairs and annually increasing property taxes is unsustainable and unfair to our residents.  Yet the Council has not discussed a plan to reverse these trends nor has it produced a sensible budget we can all understand.  Unfortunately, the way the Council has handled the budget and financial planning over the past few years is not improving the situation…

Everyone should read the Dems White Papers - http://www.madison-dems.org/content/candidate-white-papers, since they are a treasure trove of revisionist history, boilerplate solutions or bad ideas. It's Links, Hoover for GOP

Councilman, Board of Health president face former Councilwoman Astri Baillie and Ben Wolkowitz in November.

Board of Health President John Hoover will join Councilman Don Links on the ballot as the Republican nominees for two three-year Borough Council seats up for vote in November, according to preliminary primary election results Tuesday night. Links was the only Republican to file for the primary by the deadline, but Hoover and then Carmen Pico subsequently declared they would be waging write-in campaigns in an effort to get on the ballot for the general election. Links and Hoover face the Democratic ticket of former Councilwoman Astri Baillie and Ben Wolkowitz, who ran uncontested for their party's nominations. With mail-in and provisional ballots not yet counted, Links had 499 votes, Hoover 109 and Pico 71. Baillie received 313 votes and …

Well said, Christie is indeed waging a well fought war against the overpowered Unions in our good state. Where we disagree, only slightly albeit, is public sector jobs. Personally, I believe that they have no place in our economy seeing as equivalent services provided by private entities are almost assuredly more cost effective. Despite my strong beliefs, I am willing to compromise: keep the (…   more ›
