Library cleaning up material from building's 1969 construction.
The Madison Public Library will close for about two weeks starting Nov. 26 for an asbestos abatement project, the library announced. All library programs scheduled for that period are canceled, but meetings scheduled by other organizations in the Chase Auditorium will go on as planned because the room has its own HVAC system, library director Nancy Adamczyk said. Adamczyk said it's unfortunate the library has to close again so soon after Superstorm Sandy knocked out power for almost a week. It held extended hours when it reopened the Friday after the storm, and had thousands of visitors over the weekend with people keeping warm, charging cellphones, using wireless Internet, watching movies, browsing magazines and borrowing materials. Will use Veterans Day, when it is already closed, to take a further look at possible issue.
The Madison Public Library has decided to use a day it was already slated to be closed to look further into a possible asbestos problem. On Thursday, which is Veterans Day and a day they library is normally closed, a monitoring firm will do what councilman Don Links and information from the library called a "complete asbestos survey." Links spoke about the issue during the Borough Council's meeting on Monday at Bayley-Ellard. The library is planning on using the survey to both decide what approach to take as to abatement and remediation of the Tech Support area – which is thought to be the one with the most immediate need – as well as to consider the next steps on other areas. "We had an open and frank discussion last month," said Links…

Board waiting for further details and a more complete plan before taking initial steps.
After discussing the possibility of retaining an air monitoring company to take asbestos readings periodically, the Madison Public Library Board of Trustees decided against taking any official action until more information is obtained on the situation. The board first decided to delay making a motion to secure a monitoring company during its regular meeting Thursday night. It then took no action on the matter after executive session. The cost for each monitoring session, based on preliminary research, is expected to be about $3,000. A large portion of the meeting was spent on the timeline of the recent asbestos concerns. Board President Thomas Bintinger said it's been about six weeks since the issue began. On Aug. 24, he said there was an …

Council to meet with library board Thursday night; employee voices concerns.
The Borough Council said Wednesday night that it had just become aware of a potential asbestos issue at the Madison Public Library and that it had set up a meeting for Thursday night with the library board to discuss what the next steps would be. It is also conceivable that the library could close during rehabilitation. The discussion took place after library employee Abby Kalan came forward during the public session at the end of the council's meeting to express her concerns over the situation. Council members told Kalan, who is a Millburn resident, they had just found out about it in executive session. That discussion kept council longer than usual, as it did not start the regular meeting until about a half-hour after it was scheduled to…
