A 33-year-old man who died after he was struck by an SUV as he crossed Madison Avenue in Morristown last week was a learning disability specialist at Fairleigh Dickinson University's College at Florham. John Pirres, a hiker and published poet, worked at the school the past five years after graduating from the university, according to his obituary. Pirres lived in Bridgewater most of his life until moving to Hamburg four years ago. He was a member of Church of the Redeemer in Morristown and volunteered at The Eric Johnson House in Morristown, part of New Jersey AIDS Services, his obituary says. Madison resident Wilfred Burkitt, who received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, died last week at the age of 95.
There were plans for Wilfred Burkitt to lead the annual Memorial Day Parade in Madison this year, but the World War II veteran never knew it. Burkitt's oldest daughter, Lynn Welsch, said parade organizers told her they planned to rope him into the role at the last minute because they knew the 95-year-old Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient would have resisted the recognition. "He would have said, 'No, no, no, no, no,'" Welsch said. "He didn't know that." Burkitt died Thursday after a short illness, and Mayor Bob Conley held a moment of silence in his honor at the start of Monday's Madison Borough Council meeting. The funeral service was Monday. W. Stanley Brown, who oversaw a crucial fundraising campaign when borough was considering selling the historic James Library building, died last week at the age of 77.
The historic James Library building on the corner of Main Street and Green Village Road in Madison, which is owned by the borough and houses the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts, would not exist in the condition it does today if it was not for the work of W. Stanley Brown. Brown, a Chatham resident, served on the museum’s Board of Trustees from 1986 to 2012 and, as its chairman, oversaw a more than a million-dollar fundraising campaign to restore the historic building in the 1990s. The effort came at a time when borough officials were considering selling it because it was not being adequately maintained. Jack Harter was 6 years old.
Jack Harter, a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Madison who loved animals and for whom the community rallied to raise money so he could have a service dog, died last week in his sleep. The 6-year-old borough resident, who played a shepherd in the church's Christmas pageant this year, had an incurable disease that left him with little mobility and no way to consistently communicate. His funeral is scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday at the church. The Rev. A Florham Park woman who died in a one-car crash on North Passaic Avenue in Chatham last week worked as a special education teacher for many years and had three children and five grandchildren, according to her obituary. Beverly White, who moved from Florham Park to Chatham and then back to Florham Park, was a member of the Summit Art League, the Summit Jewish Community Center and the Madison-based Chabad of South East Morris County, her obituary says. Donato Sr., a lifelong Madison resident, Korean War veteran and owner of the Waverly Restaurant in the borough with his children for the past 28 years, died Monday at the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center at Lyons, according to his obituary. He was 80. Former Madison Mayor Glenn Oakes Head pursued his interests with passion, whether piloting airplanes, overseeing a company with billions of dollars in assets or leading the Madison Board of Education. The retired chairman and major shareholder of First Investors Consolidated Corporation, a national financial services firm based in New York City, and former school board president, died Sept. 14, according to his obituary. Visitation and funeral information has been announced for Madison High School Coach Robert Chandler, a teacher at the school for three decades who died Thursday after battling pancreatic cancer. Robert Chandler, a coach and teacher at Madison High School for three decades known for holding students to high standards and earning their respect, died Thursday after a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to Madison Athletic Director Sean Dowling. Chandler won two state championships in his tenure as varsity soccer coach and, last month, students and alumni showed their appreciation and support for Chandler by holding a soccer tournament—the Chandler Cup—in his honor.
