Last Chance: All County Garage Sale Registration

Deadline is coming up April 22

The Friends of Historic Speedwell is sponsoring an on May 5 and 6 at to raise funds for the nonprofit organization Historic Speedwell.

Anyone can register to become a vendor until the April 22 deadline. Mark Sutherland, the superintendent of Historic Speedwell, said that the organization is hoping for about 80 people to sign up for a spot in the arena. As of mid-April it's up to about 45 people, but Sutherland said organizers getting more people everyday.

Vendors must pay $100 fees to rent spaces, but they get to keep all of the proceeds from their sold items. The admission charge for the public is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and students, and free for children 12 and under.

The funds from the rent and admission will go to The Historic Friends of Speedwell to fund a number of restoration projects and educational programs for the organization.

"It's a big undertaking but it's going to really benefit the site," Sutherland said. "There's a potential to do some really nice things with the funds that are raised."

Some of the funds will go to schools in the area for programs about the 19th century, the Vail family, and the telegraph demonstrations that were done in Morristown. The funding will also go toward restoration of the Vail home and other historic locations.

This is the first All County Garage Sale held in a few years, and it is the first time it is benefiting Historic Speedwell. In past years the funds have gone to the Mental Health Association, and most recently, the Red Cross. At the last garage sale more than 7,000 people came in to browse the items.

Joen Ferrari, one of the members of the Friends of Historic Speedwell who organized the event, said that each time the group holds the garage sale, the turnout increases. She said that the last sale had people running through the doors as soon as the doors opened at 9 a.m.

"We had a waiting line outside before the doors opened around the building," Ferrari said. "When we opened the doors you had to stand back because people just ran."

Ferrari said that there have been really great bargains in the past from items such as furniture, jewelry, pottery, clothing, and antiques.

"It's just a conglomeration of just about anything you would ever want to think about," she said. "It's a mixture of everything and anything."

Ferrari said vendors are allowed to sell a variety of items except for food, firearms, and pornography.

The two-day sale will go on from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. during the first weekend in May.

If you're interested in becoming a vendor at the garage sale, you can receive a registration form by calling Mark Sutherland at 973-285-6534.
