MHS' Colwell Wins at Roselle Park Wrestling Tournament

Seven Madison wrestlers place.

The Madison Dodgers wrestling team had an impressive showing at the Roselle Park Tournament on Tuesday, placing seven wrestlers in the top six in a tournament filled with quality competition.

"We had four in the final, which was pretty good. Unfortunately, we only had one champ, but the competition here is very good," surmised head coach Steve Healey. "We have three teams that I think may be ranked at the end of the season with Hanover Park, Howell and Roselle Park and we were fifth going into the finals."

Leading the team was senior 145-pounder Ryan Colwell, who won his second tournament of the season and remains undefeated on the year.

In Colwell's finals match against Morristown High School's Aaron Velasquez, Colwell showed his dominance by jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead.

In the second period, Colwell was able to build his lead to 7-0 by escaping from the bottom position, scoring a takedown and working a tilt.

He hung on to win a 7-0 decision.

Placing second in the tournament was 112-pounder Patsy Davis who lost a close finals match, 3-1. Also placing second was Christian Mazzocchi (152) who battled but lost a 5-1 decision and 285-pounder Michael Boardman who was pinned in the first period.

"With the class of competition I think we did well. Placing seven out of 10 is pretty good. A couple of guys again could have won some matches that they lost, but overall I was happy with the progress of the team," Healey said.

Also placing on Tuesday was 189-pounder Ed Carr (third), 160-pounder Anthony Costa (fifth) and 215-pounder Thomas Tracy (sixth).

"Now, going into duel meets, if we can transfer some of those close losses into wins, we'll be okay," Healey added.
