Madison's Mantone Heads to Atlantic City to Grapple for NJ Wrestling Title

220-pounder one of three Morris County wrestlers in bracket looking for individual gold.

One of New Jersey’s most exciting high school sporting events will invade Atlantic City this weekend, as wrestlers from all over the state battle to be crowned the best. 

Patch towns in Morris County are well represented in this weekend’s tournament, where wrestlers will try to outlast one another in 13 different weight classes, ranging from 103 lbs. to 220 lbs. 

220 lbs.:

Locals will want to keep an eye on the 220 lb. bracket, as three Morris County grapplers will seek gold.

Jesse Windt of West Morris Central has a first-round bye, and is scheduled to wrestle Tyler Poling (also with a first-round bye) of Brick Memorial. Windt has just one loss on the season and steamrolled his three Region 1 opponents last weekend with a pin, 6-0 decision, and 3-1 decision.

Stephen Hill of Parsippany Hills is one of three wrestlers from the school heading down the Parkway for the weekend. He’s also been given a first-round bye, and will face the winner of Bergen Catholic’s Christian Jenco vs. Red Bank Catholic’s Shawn McCord.

Madison’s lone representative, Donovan Mantone, will battle Frank Fortino of Haddonfield in the first round. Mantone lost to Hill in the Region 3 tournament last weekend, but did not lose a regular season match.

195 lbs.:

Another Parsippany Hills wrestler, Nick D’Uva, will take on Tyree Sutton of Keansburg in the first round of this bracket. If D’Uva advances, he’ll take on either James Valley of North Plainfield or Anthony Landberg of Wayne Valley.

182 lbs.:

Parsippany Hills third wrestler, Michael Weiss, will take to the mat against Chad Freshnock of Middletown North in the first round of this bracket. The winner will face Johnny Sebastian of Bergen Catholic, who has a first-round bye.

Also in the 182 lb. category is Mendham High School’s Sam Button, who has a first-round bye. Button will wait for the winner of Christian LaFragula from St. Joseph vs. Dean Helstowski of St. Peters Prep. Button has just one regular season loss to go with 12 pins. He outlasted his three regional opponents last weekend with a 15-0 technical fall, 5-3 decision, and 5-2 decision.

152 lbs.: 

Jefferson will be sending two wrestlers to the tournament, one of which is Luke Bohn. He’ll take the mat in round one against Raymond Iodice of Caldwell. The winner will take on Joe Grello of Bergen Catholic, who has a first-round bye. Bohn amassed 14 pins during the regular season.

138 lbs.:

Montville will be sending Anthony Fano to the tournament to take on Joseph Oliva of Ridgewood in the first round. Fano had just one regular season loss and eight pins. 

Mendham’s second wrestler comes in the 138 category with Eric Friedman. He’ll be taking on Travis Vasquez of Delbarton. Friedman beat Fano in the regional tournament a 3-2 margin.

120 lbs.:

Bryan Damon of Jefferson will enjoy a first-round bye in this bracket. He’ll await the winner of Bergen Catholic’s Tyler Casamenti vs. Ryan Walsh of South Plainfield. Damon’s three regional wins included a 10-3 decision, 7-3 decision, and 2-1 sudden victory.
