Madison Wrestlers Win Tenth Straight Match

Early lead too much for Whippany Park to overcome.

The Madison High School wrestling team made easy work of Whippany Park on Friday night as the Dodgers, who were put in the back gym because the undefeated Dodgers basketball squad also had a game, started quickly–jumping out to a 32-0 lead.

152-pounder Christian Mazzocchi started things off with a third-period technical fall and Anthony Costa (160) followed up with a hard-fought 8-7 decision win.

The Dodgers would then get six points from their next four wrestlers as Ed Carr (171), Jack Anzul (189) and Tom Tracy (215) all recorded pins and heavyweight Mike Boardman received a forfeit.

The first loss of the night came from freshman John Costa (103) who battled back from a 5-0 second period deficit, but lost a tough 7-5 decision.

After 112-pounder Patsy Davis recorded a 15-0 technical fall, the Dodgers hit a slump, dropping the next five matches to make the score 37-24 with only one match remaining.

That match was 145-pounder Ryan Colwell, who ended things on a good note for Madison as he recorded a pin just 31 seconds into the first period, sealing the 43-24 win for the Dodgers.

"It was a good tune-up going into (Saturday's) quad," head coach Steve Healey said. "We weren't in our main gym and I think the kids kind of expected to win, which may have taken a little emotion out of it. Some kids lost some matches that they maybe shouldn't have and hopefully they learn that every match is important, regardless of what the atmosphere is."

Up next for Madison, who has now won ten straight, is a quad match with Morris Hills, Milburn and Bernardsville High School on Saturday morning in Madison.
