Madison High School Wrestling Wins Big

Despite missing three starters, Dodgers come out victorious.

A somewhat depleted Madison Dodgers wrestling team overcame obstacles and pulled out a dominant victory over Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 52-22, in a match that saw the Dodgers record seven pins.

"Coming into the match, we thought it was going to be tight," head coach Steve Healey said after the win. "We had a couple of guys miss weight and we had to move some guys around. I told the kids in the locker room that they were going to have to step it up to account for that adversity."

Setting the tone for Madison was 189-pounder Ed Carr, who recorded a second period pin in the night's first match.

"Eddie Carr did a great job. He came away with a pin in a match where we weren't sure how it would go," Healey said.

Following Carr's pin was Thomas Tracy (215) who despite battling, lost a 6-4 decision and 285-pounder Michael Boardman, who showed solid stand-up in a17-5 major decision.

Madison received a forfeit at 103 pounds and Patsy Davis (112) recorded a pin just 49 seconds into the first period. Davis' win gave Madison a 22-3 lead over the Raiders.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood came back strong, winning four of the next five matches, and it looked like it was going to be a tight one.

But Madison was just too strong.

145-pounder Ryan Colwell began the final onslaught with a second period pin. Christian Mazzocchi (152), Anthony Costa (160) and Jack Anzul (171) all followed suit, recording pins to end the match and give the Dodgers the decisive victory.

"All of the kids wrestled real well," Healey surmised. "For our first duel meet, I was happy. We went out there and every kid did their part, whether it was not getting pinned or not giving up extra bonus points on the team score."

Up next for Madison is another road match, this time at Hanover Park on Wednesday, Dec. 22.
