Late Heroics Give Madison Hockey First Win

Anderson's hat trick leads Dodgers past Mount Olive, 4-3.

Erik Anderson scored with less than two seconds remaining in the third period to send the ice hockey team past Mount Olive High, 4-3,  Monday at Mennen Arena.

Despite a slow start, Madison (1-1) was able to gain momentum as the game progressed, regrouping from its season-opening 9-3 loss to Roxbury on Wednesday.

"The Roxbury game and then the first six to ten minutes of this game were very sloppy," Madison head coach Dave Hanson said. "They were running around, they weren't playing their positions, but they settled down and got better and better."

Leading all Dodgers on Monday was Anderson, Madison's sophomore captain, who tallied three goals and an assist in the win.

Madison fell behind early as Mount Olive's Casey DeLorenzo netted a pair of goals before the Dodgers could get things settled.

"We're getting caught three men deep and we're not back-checking, so when you play a team like Mount Olive, they pass very well and they spread out very well and they're going to get a lot of odd-man rushes when we have three men down low," said Hanson.

"We came out a little flat, took them a little light," said senior captain Spencer Waresk, who recorded three assists in the game. "But after the first period, coach got us pumped up so we were ready to go."

Down 2-0 in the second period, senior forward Brett Anton scored just two minutes in to get the Dodgers within striking distance.

Shorthanded after a penalty call, the Dodgers again found the net, this time as Waresk fed Anderson on an odd-man rush to tie the game at 2-2.

DeLorenzo would put the Marauders ahead once again as he scored his third goal of the game, putting a shot past Madison goalie Grant Perry to make the score 3-2.

Anderson, who tallied 86 points as a freshman, would find the net two more times, including the game-winner as time was about to expire, to give the Dodgers their first win of the season.

"The game plan in the third period was to out-shoot them and to crash the net," Hanson said. "They have a very good goaltender, so I think the only way we were going to score was by shooting the puck on net and crashing."

"It feels good to get the win and get the two points tonight," Hanson added.
