Dodgers Meister, Ellis Lead by Example

Madison seniors have impressive week.

Talk to high school coaches and they'll likely pay tribute to the importance of seniors on their teams. But they'll also tell you that the presence of upperclassmen on a roster doesn't always translate to senior leadership, on or off the court. Not so the case at in 2011, as demonstrated by our Patch Athletes of the Week.

After playing his last nine games on the road, Madison senior Jake Meister stepped up his game for the Dodgers boys basketball teams in their first two home games in two months.

Against Hanover Park on Feb. 3, Meister racked up 18 points and seven assists as the Dodgers posted their 10th win of the season with a dominating 76-42 performance.

Two days later against Chatham High in the opening round of the Morris County Tournament, Meister again got the Dodgers out in front early as he recorded 13 points in the first half on his way to a 26-point, six-rebound performance.

Meister’s outstanding play helped lead Madison to a 58-47 win over their crosstown rivals, advancing the Dodgers to the second round of the MCT.

“It feels awesome,” Meister said. “I love getting our team ahead and I love knowing that they can go to me if they need help. It just feels good.”

Madison senior Mackenzie Ellis had an impressive week as she signed a letter of intent to play field hockey at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor beginning in the fall.

Ellis was a captain for the Madison field hockey this past fall and is also the starting forward and team captain on the Lady Dodgers basketball team this season.

In field hockey, Ellis was asked to move from forward to midfielder in a bid to bolster the Dodger defense. The move immediately paid dividends as she led a Madison defense which allowed one goal per game on the way to a 13-4-2 record.

Ellis, who also helped lead the field hockey team to a Morris County Finals appearance this season, has also helped lead the Madison basketball team to seven wins in 2011.
