Dodgers Eye Title Tilt After Crushing Irvington, 65-11

Madison rights ship after two straight match losses.

The wrestling team took out their frustrations after losing two straight matches this past week by crushing Irvington High, 65-11, in Madison.

After dropping their first match of the night at 152 pounds, the Dodgers (13-4) won the next 11 consecutive matches as Ed Carr (160 pounds), Nick Haboj (171), Jack Anzul (189), Tom Tracy (215), Mike Boardman (285), David Schuckman (103), Doug Capuder (112), Patsy Davis (119), John Costa (125), Conor Stark (130) and Max Gotsch (135) helped to build an insurmountable 55-5  lead.

After dropping their second match of the night, a second-period pin of Matt Allen (140 pounds), Madison got right back on track as Peter Willis (145) closed out the Dodger win with an 8-0 match victory.

“Pretty much everyone performed as expected tonight,” Madison head coach Steve Healey said after the win. “We scheduled [Irvington] because it’s a district match. Everyone who won [tonight] will definitely be seeded above an Irvington kid in the districts, which is kind of the point of wrestling these matches.”

While the Dodgers headed into this match with supreme confidence–fueled by Irvington’s poor 3-8 record—Healey says the team is focused on taking home a conference title, as they face off against Parsippany High on Monday.

“We’re focused on Parsippany on Monday, but as I told the guys, you have to take it one match at a time,” Healey explained. “We had a district match tonight and a quad tomorrow [Saturday], but everybody is looking forward to Monday and trying to get the job done and win us a championship.”

Madison senior captain Mike Boardman echoed his coach’s sentiments.

“It feels good, especially going into Monday with the big conference match for the championship,” said Boardman, who recorded a first-period pin on Friday. “A win tonight is good and a couple of wins tomorrow [Saturday], and we should be ready [for Parsippany].”

“We’re just pushing hard and hopefully we’ll win it on Monday,” he added.
