Caruso, Dodgers Eye Run to State Softball Playoffs

Madison preparing for 'marathon' season in 2011.

The weather is starting to warm up (pay no attention to the snow on the ground), and that means spring sports are about to start for varsity squads. As opening day approaches, we're taking a look at each of the teams as they ready for competition. Today, we take a look at the Madison softball team.

Overview

The start of the game schedule is still in doubt, but already, the Dodgers are expecting a big season on the diamond. With a core group of upperclassmen returning and experienced underclassmen filling out the roster, first-year head coach Dale Garlick and his squad are primed to make a impact in 2011.

Keep your eye on

  • Nikki Caruso, Shortstop (Sr.)—Skilled with both bat and glove, Caruso has already signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Pittsburgh. After a monster season in 2010, Caruso is looking to pick up where she left off as a centerpiece of the Madison team.
  • Julianna Vezza, Catcher/Outfield (Sr.)—Garlick has yet to decide if Vezza will catch or play in the outfield this season, but wherever she ends up, he’s confident that she’ll be play a big role on this team.
  • Mackenzie Ellis, First Base (Sr.)—Ellis is entering her fourth year starting at first base and has proven to be  very important to the Dodgers. As a returning starter and team leader, Garlick is anticipating a good season from the Madison senior.

They'll miss

  • Emily Klein, Centerfield—Klein was a solid bat in the Dodger lineup in 2010 but Madison is confident that it can overcome the loss.

Coach's Take

“I expect that we’ll continue to work hard during the season. They’ve worked hard during the preseason and they’ve had to get used to some of my ways. The trick is to realize that this isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. Once the games start, we don’t stop working and we don’t stop improving.” —Garlick

They said it

“I think it’s definitely a big improvement from last year. We’re a young team and we have two freshman pitchers that we’re relying on this year, but I think we’re going to improve and be better than we were last year. I expect us to make it to states and I expect to give teams like Pequannock and Morris Catholic a run for their money.” —Caruso
