5th Grade Lacrosse Posts 3-1 Record for the Week

Madison boys off to strong start in tough stretch.

Madison 8  Chester 5

On Tuesday night, the Madison 5th grade lacrosse Dodgers (12-3) kicked off a tough stretch of five games in seven days. The Dodgers took on the combined team of Chester/Mendham at Bayley-Ellard.  Madison came out on fire with three first period goals by attackman Nick O’Hara and middies Matt Campbell and Ryan Schmitz.  In the second quarter, Madison’s Chet Comizio, Campbell and O’Hara put in three more goals and the Dodgers had a 6-2 lead at halftime. Proving to be a tough opponent, Chester/Mendham scored two quick goals to make the score to 6-4 before Comizio blasted a shot from the restraining line to give the Dodgers a 7-4 lead.  In the fourth quarter, Madison’s Nick “Maverick” Spagnoletti scored an insurance goal in the 8-5 victory.

Madison 7 Morristown 2

In a showdown of two powerhouse programs, Madison hosted local rival Morristown on May 14.  Drake Mead stood on his head making three unbelievable saves in the first quarter.  Feeding off of Mead’s energy, O’Hara scored off of a great assist by Spagnoletti and Trevor Jasen.  Not to be outdone, Spagnoletti scored on the Dodgers’ next possession.  Madison went out to score three more times in the first half with goals by Tommy “Puzzles” MacCowatt, Jasen, and Comizio.  Taking a 5-2 lead into the third quarter, Madison’s defense really shined in the 2nd half.  The defense was anchored by Mark Cowan and Jeremy Nugent, who both gave big hits to Morristown players that came into the Madison zone.  Off of one big turnover, Madison’s James McDonnell and Pierson Rambusch did a superb job of working the ball down to Comizio for his second goal of the game.  In the fourth quarter, Jack “Blackjack” Tamburro scored his first goal of the season and iced the game for the Dodgers, who went on to win 7-2.

Double Header: Game 1: Madison 3 Highlands Red 4

On an extremely foggy Sunday afternoon, Madison hosted the Highlands Red team.  In the first game, Madison’s Matt Campbell gave the Dodgers an early 1-0 lead.  Not to be outdone, the Highlands Red team scored two quick goals and led the Dodgers 3-1 at halftime.  The Dodgers came out in the third quarter and rallied around the great play of MacCowatt who juked six players en route to a coast-to-coast goal.  MacCowatt’s goal brought the Dodgers to within one at 3-2 at the end of the third period, but on the ensuing possession, Highlands scored off a long shot through the fog.  Madison continued to fight in the fourth quarter, but could only score one goal off of a precision-guided blast from John McCarthy, his first of the season.

Game 2: Madison 7 Highlands Black 2

Fifteen minutes after losing their first game in almost three weeks, the Dodgers got back to work against the Highlands Black team. Madison looked to erase the memory of the loss by unloading on the Highlands team early and often. Attackman Ian Waresk and MacCowatt helped the Dodgers get out to a 2-1 lead before Evan “Red” Sievers scored his first goal of the season.  In the second quarter, the Dodgers got two goals in just 18 seconds as Campbell fired two missiles, and a 5-1 halftime lead.  After halftime, the Dodgers flexed their muscles with the play of defensemen Jake Dyer, Scott Priscu, and Griffin Heyrich.  The three defensemen did an outstanding job of protecting the crease area and giving no easy looks.  By playing together, the Dodger defense was able to feed the ball to Nick Taylor for a great lefty bounce shot score.  In the fourth quarter, the Dodger offense proved the old adage that “goals come in bunches.” McCarthy and Sievers got on the board for the second time, and the Dodgers won, 7-2.
