Boys roll up 20-3 scoring advantage on way to 4-0 mark.

The Madison fifth grade boys lacrosse team (9-2) played in the 6th Annual Roxbury Lacrosse Festival on May 7 in Succasunna, posting a 4-0 record while outscoring their opponents by a combined 20-3. The Dodgers got goals from eight different players and assists from 11 players.

Game 1:  Madison 5  Roxbury 0

In the first of four games, the Dodgers faced off against host Roxbury.  Griffin Lutz, one of two new players for Madison, created a turnover using a strong poke check and then fed the ball back to Nick O’Hara to get the Dodgers on the scoreboard, 1-0.  The other new addition, Ian Waresk, got the next two goals and helped the Dodgers to a 3-0 halftime lead.  In the second half, O’Hara earned himself a hat trick with two more scores. In net, the Dodgers were led by Nick “Maverick” Spagnoletti who recorded his second shutout of the season.

Game 2: Madison 3  Tewksbury 2

Tewksbury proved to be the Dodgers toughest opponent of the day, taking an early 1-0 lead only to have the goal answered by Madison’s Chet Comizio.  Tewksbury kept the heat on the Dodgers by getting a late first-half goal and led at halftime, 2-1.  In the second half, the game was all Dodgers as the defense led the comeback with Mark Cowan, Jeremy Nugent, and Pierson Rambusch all forcing critical turnovers. Madison’s attackmen were too hot to handle, as Spagnoletti scored the equalizer with 4:38 to go and Trevor Jasen scored the game-winner with 3:25 left in the game.

Madison controlled the ball for much of this game and middie Matt Campbell helped guide the Dodgers early on.  Campbell opened the game with a great assist to O’Hara as the Dodgers took a 1-0 lead.  Campbell then dialed his own number for the next two goals.  After the half, the Dodger scoring continued as Ryan Schmitz fed the ball to Spagnoletti for the fourth tally.  The fifth goal was the work of great passing by the Dodger middies and attack.  Middie Sam Kirby moved the ball with precision to Evan Sievers who wisely made the extra pass to a wide-open  Spagnoletti.  The sixth and final goal was scored by Jack “Gutch” Goetschus who beat two opponents to give himself a good look at the goal.  Drake Mead continued his outstanding season with a shutout in net for the Dodgers.

Game 4:  Madison 6  Randolph 1

In the nastiest game of the afternoon, the Dodgers took on the hard-hitting Randolph Rams. Randolph came out with a physical style of play and gave the Dodgers some big hits.  In the first half, Waresk and Goetschus gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.  At halftime, co-head coaches Joe and Sam DeMarzo challenged their team to hit Randolph back where it hurts the most, on the scoreboard.  The Dodgers did just that.  Early in the second half, Chet Comizio from his middie position moved the ball down to attackman O’Hara for a quick goal.  Following the O’Hara goal, Dillion O’Loughlin blasted a shot in the net to give the Dodgers a 4-1 lead.  O’Hara and Comizio each added one more goal apiece on the way to a 6-1 victory.

The Dodgers come home to face MendhamChester on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Bayley Ellard.  The Dodgers stay home at Bayley Ellard for the weekend as they host Morristown at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and two games against the Highlands ‘black’ and ‘red’ teams on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
