Torey J. Named High-Performing NJ 'Reward School'

Torey J. Sabatini School has been named a high-performing "Reward School" by the New Jersey Department of Education.

The Madison elementary school was included in a list of 57 Reward Schools throughout the state released this month.

Reward Schools could receive public recognition and have the opportunity to share successful practices with educators across the state, the state said of last year's schools.

The two types of Reward Schools include high-performing, which indicates the school has a high level of proficiency across all subgroups of students over a number of years, and high-progress, which indicates the school has a high level of student growth. Torey J. Sabatini School was categorized as a high-performing school.

In calculating which schools are Reward Schools, the state takes into account data from the last three school years, including NJASK, HSPA and APA exams.

Other Morris County schools commended by the state as Reward Schools included Montville's Valley View School; Mendham Borough's Hilltop and Mountainview Schools; and Mendham Township Middle School.

The state's methodology

The State recognizes schools that have achieved high levels of student performance—both in the aggregate and in each eligible student subgroup—over a number of years. We rank each school’s individual subgroup proficiencies against those of other schools in the state. Schools in which 1) each eligible subgroup ranks in the top 10% of that subgroup’s performance across the state, 2) the overall proficiency rate is greater than 90%, or at the high school level, 95%, and 3) the overall graduation rate (where applicable) is greater than 90% are classified as Reward Schools With High Student Performance.
