Three Questions for Board of Education Candidates
Carmen Pico is the first candidate in our series.
Elections for the are scheduled for April 27. In the first of a series, Madison Patch asked Board candidates why they are best-qualified to serve, and where they stand on a number of issues. Patch will feature the responses of a different candidate throughout the week. The first candidate is Carmen Pico.
Patch: What makes you best qualified to serve on the Board of Education?
Pico: I feel that I am best qualified because of my past experience on the Randolph Board of Education, and my experience on the Mt. Olive Childhood Development Center's Board of Directors. I also feel my knowledge in the building trades will help when repairs are needed to the schools. I also have knowledge of the laws governing school boards. My diverse background will add a new dimension to the board.
Patch: What is the most urgent issue facing Madison schools today?
Pico: I feel the most urgent issue facing the board is the lack of aid to schools from the state. We must be dilegent when negotiating contracts with the teachers and staff. I also feel we must not take lightly the maintenance of our buildings.

Patch: What strategy would you employ for maintaining programs and staff amid shrinking state education aid to suburban districts?
Pico: The only strategy that will work is to thoroughly evaluate the education system. I know that will be a big task but I am willing to take the bull by the horns to get the job done.
