State Title Will Have Nice 'Ring' to it for MHS Golf Team

BOE chips in for championship keepsakes.

The growing list of state champions at the is getting more expensive for the Madison .

The schools panel this week agreed to help the members of the high school golf team purchase rings to commemorate their state title.

The ten members of the varsity team captured the combined North 1 & 2 Group 1 sectional golf championship in May, led by section individual titleist Andrew Wells. The duffers later took fourth place among Group 1 schools at the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions. They were coached by Matt Millichap.

At Tuesday's meeting the Board was read a letter from former BOE member Linda Gilbert whose son, Matt, was on the team, asking the district to approve an approriation of $40 per team member toward the purchase of championship rings, and an individual award for Wells.

The BOE came in for criticism late last year when it approved $2,000 for rings for the Dodger state champion football team in the midst of a budget crunch. The panel in 2010 had agreed to spend $100 toward rings for the field hockey team.

A motion to approve $480 for the golf rings passed unanimously.

"The Board offers its congratulations to the team and to Andrew Wells," BOE President Lisa Ellis said.
