State Aid Saves Fourth-Grade Music Program

Board of Education makes good on pledge.

Making good on an earlier pledge, the Madison plans to restore the job of a popular district music teacher that had been marked for elimination in the schools budget.

The agenda posted online ahead of the board’s meeting Tuesday includes an item covering the reappointment of Jaclyn Altieri, an elementary music teacher who works at both Torey J. Sabatini and Kings Road schools, at a salary of $50,259 for the 2011-12 school year.

Altieri’s job, as well as the fourth-grade instrumental music program, were among the planned cuts as the school board sought to keep its spending under the maximum 2-percent increase mandated by the state.

Students, teachers and parents made a series of emotional pleas to the board not to make cuts to the music program.

Board of Education President Lisa Ellis said the additional funding for music-related and other spending came from $135,000 in extraordinary aid from the state.
