Schools Get Madison Education Foundation Grants

Twelve grants total $21,300 for five schools.

The Madison Education Foundation approved 12 teacher grants totaling $21,300 to be distributed at the borough's five public schools.

A district-wide grant for a quintet of electric string instruments and sound system will be use by students in grades 4 – 12 in all five schools. MEF said it partnered with the Madison Music Association in funding this project.
 
Also in the arts, students in various grades will be working on a mural with professional artist and Madison resident Dan Fenelon. Prior to the mural project, fourth grade students have been making 3-D sculptures inspired by Native American dolls as part of a cross-curriculum project.

Science teaching will be enhanced by the NBC News Archives on Demand approved for .  This collection of video resources, primary sources, images, and text resources provides access to downloadable information that can enhance lessons. The license is district-wide and can be used in science lessons for grades 1-12.
 
At the , the Foundation approved digital recorders for oral assessments of students in World Language classes. The new recorders help students practice and will save time in the transferring their recorded assignments to teacher computers.  The department will start by piloting different models before making a larger purchase.

The foundation is now fundraising and preparing for the remaining grant cycles in the 2010-11 school year. The spring 2011 application deadline is April 25. Approval decisions will be made mid-June so that purchases over the summer will have teachers up and running with their new resources when school starts in the fall.
 
A 5K Race and Family Fitness Day May 1 will help suppport the Foundation's work.
