School Warns of Luring Incident in Berkeley Heights

17-year-old student was asked if she wanted a ride.

The Madison Public Schools are warning students to refrain from any communication and contact with strangers while traveling to and from school.

The warning, which is on the district's Web site, comes in response to an attempted luring report Tuesday by Berkeley Heights police.

Police reported that a 17-year-old female high school student, who was at her bus stop on Plainfield Avenue by Liberty Avenue on Tuesday at 6:55 a.m. waiting to go to the Union County Magnet School in Scotch Plains, was approached by a male
driver.

According to the report, the suspect stated to the female, "Hey, your bus isn't coming today. Would you like a ride?"

The female replied no and the suspect then asked, "Can I have your phone
number?" to which she replied no again. The suspect then asked if the female wanted his phone number and when she replied no he drove off southbound on Plainfield Avenue.
