Ben Wieler Soccer Tournament Sign-Ups Open

Members of Madison High School's Class of 2007 will host the 4th Annual Ben Wieler Soccer Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 24, and registration is open for teams of five that would like to participate.

Proceeds from the tournament will be used to honor the memory of Ben Wieler with a scholarship at Madison High School in his name.

Wieler passed away in 2009 with family members by his side in Barcelona, Spain, where he was studying abroad, after complications from surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. He was 20.

Ben was a student in the Class of 2007 and was a positive role model for all who knew him.

Nicole Cecala, president of the Class of 2007, created a Scholarship Fund at Madison High School to pay tribute to Wieler, who is remembered by teachers and administrators as kind and compassionate.

As a member of the Madison School District Strategic Planning Committee with a peer, parents, community members, and faculty and administrators from the schools, Wieler helped shape the current district Mission Statement which embodies the very person Wieler was:

The Madison School District will inspire and challenge all students to be life-long learners, empowered with the knowledge, skills, and character to shape their futures, realize their dreams, and contribute positively to the world.

Many of the students that knew Wieler will be home for the Thanksgiving holiday and will be participating in the soccer tournament once again. The tournament has become an event where Madison High School graduates, current students, and members of the community come together to remember Wieler, and a moment of silence is held in his honor.

Donations for the Scholarship Fund will also be gratefully accepted. Checks should be made payable to Madison High School and can be mailed to Madison High School, 170 Ridgedale Avenue, Madison, NJ 07940. In the memo section of the check, indicate Ben Wieler Scholarship Fund.

Those who aren’t up to the high level of competition, can cheer on their favorite team and enjoy available food and beverages, with proceeds also benefitting the Scholarship Fund.
