25 MPH Limit Sought for Main St. School Zone

Madison's governing body approved a resolution Monday endorsing the creation of a 25 mph school zone speed limit in front of Madison Junior School when children are present, and asking the New Jersey Department of Transportation to respond expeditiously to the borough police department's request for the change to the state road.

The resolution by the Madison Police Department, Borough Council, and Board of Education to increase pedestrian safety at the crosswalk in front of Madison Junior School, where the speed limit is 35 mph and students have been struck by cars.

The Department of Transportation has said it and is reviewing the results of a field investigation to determine if other safety upgrades are warranted.

Main Street is a state road, also known as New Jersey Route 124.

The resolution asks that "25 miles per hour be observed when passing through the Madison Junior School zone, during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway, or while children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours," for about a tenth of a mile.
