Zoning Board Reaffirms YMCA Pool Addition
Board members vote unanimously in favor of resolution to memorialize YMCA's variance application.
A month ago, the Madison Area YMCA's request to build a 13,363-foot addition was approved following its third hearing in front of the Madison Zoning Board. The board reaffirmed that decision without incident at its regular meeting Thursday at Bayley-Ellard.
Board vice chair Joseph Glade introduced a resolution for memorialization regarding the YMCA's application; the resolution passed unanimously without debate.
The board voted 5-0 on July 9 to allow the YMCA to construct a 13,363-foot addition, which will house an eight-lane swimming pool. That vote was the culmination of three hearings in which the YMCA made its case.
At the first, which took place at a March 16 special meeting, YMCA representatives addressed the concerns of residents of Keep Street, an adjacent local road which would be affected by a front-yard setback.
The April 29 special hearing saw testimony from the YMCA's site engineer and traffic expert.
At the July 8 hearing, the YMCA offered a slightly different proposal, eliminating access to a new parking lot and moving a water retention basin, both in response to Keep Street resident concerns.
The application was approved at that hearing, 5-0, as a number of members were absent. The application needed a five vote supermajority because a D, or use, variance was required. That variance was for non-conforming use–the YMCA sits in the R-2 single family residential zone. Therefore, all five members in attendance needed to vote yes to approve the application.
Thursday night the board reaffirmed that vote by memorializing the application.
