Too Much Mulch Leads to Free Delivery Offer

Madison has more mulch than it knows what to do with.

A mountain of fermenting mulch at the Public Works yard on James Avenue that has been divied into smaller piles and will be grinded into finer pieces on Monday, said David Maines, Madison's superintendent of Public Works.

Maines needs 500 cubic yards for May Day, when volunteers will use the mulch to spruce up the borough.

But Madison has another 1,500 cubic yards, much of it from the aftermath of  that it wants to get off its hands.

Councilman Dr. Vincent Esposito raised the issue during Monday's Borough Council meeting.

"We'll just dump it in the driveway," Maines said. "That's all we're going to do. And whatever you take, we don't take back."

The mulch would be made available to residents for free on a first come first serve basis. Contractors would be able to use the mulch at a fee that hasn't yet been determined.
