Gov. Christie Nominates Mayor Holden to Board of Public Utilities

State body regulates utilities and telecommunications.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie today announced the nomination of Madison Mayor Mary-Anna Holden to the Board of Public Utilities.

The BPU is a powerful state regulatory body, overseeing energy, telecommunications, cable TV, sewers, and water. It also runs the state’s clean energy program.

The five-seat board under state law must be composed 3-2 in favor of either party, this time in favor of the GOP under Christie. Holden’s nomination would fill a vacant seat.

The Governor also nominated Democrat Joseph L. Fiordaliso of Livingston for a second term. He has served on the board since 2005.

Both appointments are subject to approval by the state Senate.

“This is something I certainly aspired to, with my interest in clean energy, and green building,” said Holden in an email to Patch. She also pointed out her experience in overseeing Madison’s electric and water utility; the borough’s telecom network, wastewater treatment plant, as well as increasing recycling.

“This is very exciting, with a chance to see the new energy master plan implemented,” she said. “This is not a fait accompli, as it must pass Senatorial muster. [It is] not guaranteed.”

Holden earlier served on the state Historic Trust, under Democratic governors.
