Happy Newt Year: Video Shows Madison is Gingrich's Kind of Town
Rose City makes a surprise appearance in presidential hopeful's holiday message.
The New Hampshire primary scheduled for Tuesday may be Newt Gingrich's last best hope of keeping his struggling campaign afloat, but Madisonians can sleep easier knowing their town shares an optimistic vision of America with the Republican presidential hopeful.
The candidate has earned a paucity of good news lately, what with a disappointing showing in the Iowa caucuses, failing to get on the primary ballot in Virginia and earning an endorsement from Todd Palin.
But it was the candidate's official holiday video message that brought his message home to the Rose City. In the video posted in December, Gingrich appears with his wife, Callista, and they speak of the joys of the Christmas season, comparing the bright lights of home holiday decorations to the "fire of freedom that burns bright in the America we love."

That America, apparently, is Madison. A short clip appears at the 11-second mark, looking across Main Street and south down Waverly Place. Videotaped after a recent snow, the bare branches of the trees are delicately clad in white, and photogenic drifts surround the parked cars. The clock tower frames the scene to the left, while in the distance a commuter train eases across the viaduct into the . The American flag is visible in the background.
Gingrich supporters will have to wait until Tuesday to learn if that vision is enough to paint an optimistic picture for their candidate.
