Supermarket Evacuated After Basement Equipment Malfunctions

Whole Foods briefly evacuated Thursday while fire department checked smoke in basement.

Madison Whole Foods was evacuated for about a half-hour on Thursday while officials responded to a smoke condition in the basement caused by malfunctioning equipment.

Madison Fire Chief Lou DeRosa said the department responded at 12:34 p.m. Power was shut down power to the malfunctioning heating unit, and the fire department cleared smoke from the basement. No smoke got upstairs, DeRosa said.

The Madison Health Department, police department and ambulance squad also responded.
