Two patrons of the Madison Stop & Shop reported their purses were stolen on the same day last month, borough police said.

Both patrons shopped at the supermarket Dec. 27 and unintentionally left their purses in a shopping cart. One victim’s credit cards later were used at several locations outside Madison, according to a police news release.

The Madison Police Detective Bureau is investigating. Anyone with information can call Detective Paul Kosakowski at 973-593-3007.

Unfortunately, there are opportunistic thieves everywhere. We cannot blame the victims. Over 25 years ago, a similar thing happened to me. I had placed my handbag in the top part of the shopping cart and realizing that was probably not a good idea, I zipped my handbag which had my car keys and wallet inside. One moment of reaching down to the bottom shelf and coming up looking for my handbag revealed it missing. I screamed, "Someone stole my pocketbook!" The teenaged female thief began running at that moment, dropped the stolen handbag, and was spotted by store security. I never saw the thief but was reunited with my handbag, items inside intact. I was luckier than many and have since advised individuals not to place their handbags in the shopping cart unless their hands and eyes remain on it. Sorry that others had to suffer the same injustice that I did many years ago, but were not as fortunate to recover it.
