Madison Police Deliver Baby Girl at Drew

Baby girl was born around 4 a.m. Friday; mother and daughter are reported to be doing fine, police said.

and Drew Public Safety officers were on hand for a special delivery at around 4 a.m. Friday as they assisted a woman in giving birth to a baby girl in one of the apartments on campus, police and university officials said.

Patrolman Anthony Maccario and Sgt. John Miscia responded to Wendel Hall at 3:54 a.m. and arrived to find the 33-year-old mother in labor with the crown of the baby's head visible, Madison Police Chief John Trevena said.

The officers quickly positioned her on her back and prepared for delivery of the child and, after two quick pushes, the baby girl emerged. Maccario cleared the baby's airway and she began to cry, indicating she had no breathing difficulties, police said.

Maccario wrapped the baby girl and placed her with her mother. The and paramedics from Morristown Medical Center arrived, and the mother and child were taken to the hospital for evaluation, police said.

Trevena said the mother and daughter were doing fine last they heard.

"The Drew community is gratified to know that mother and baby are healthy," university spokesman Michael Bressman said. "We are grateful for the quick response of Drew Public Safety Corporal Jesse Traynor and Patrol Officer Altin Celoaliaj, the Madison Police Department and the First Aid Squad, and extend our congratulations to the new family."

This baby is our fifth grandchild, first grandaughter, and we are just as proud of her (and her mother, dad and big brother), as we can possibly be - we can't wait to get our hads on her!!! Thank you Patrolman Anthony Maccario and Sgt. John Miscia - great job.
