Luis Goncalves and Paul Papamarkos were off duty when they saw alleged robbery attempt on train tracks last December.

Madison police officers Paul Papamarkos and Luis Goncalves were honored at a New Jersey State PBA Valor Awards dinner for helping thwart an alleged robbery attempt last December.

The two Madison police officers were off duty and on their way to a holiday party on Dec. 3, 2012, when they saw a man being chased along train tracks in Newark and stopped to help.

Madison NJ PBA 92 shared a photo last week from the awards dinner on its Facebook page.

When the officers got out of their vehicle, the man yelled he was being robbed. The officers detained five individuals at gunpoint until NJ Transit and Newark police arrived, Madison Police Chief Darren Dachisen said in a news release after the incident.

Police filed attempted robbery charges against two of the individuals.

“They came to the aid of the victim and took the suspects into custody without any concern for their own safety," Dachisen said in the release. "You don’t stop being a police officer just because it is the end your shift. They both did a fantastic job!”
