Girl, 7, Stabilizing After Being Hit by Car

Madison resident might have been trying to cross Park Avenue on Thursday evening, police said.

A 7-year-old Madison girl suffered serious injuries but is stabilizing at Morristown Medical Center after being hit by a car Thursday night on Park Avenue in the borough, police said Friday.

The girl, whose name was not released by police, was with her 10-year-old sister at the time and police believe she might have tried to cross Park Avenue to return to her Kinney Street home, Sgt. John Keymer said.

The accident

The car was traveling westbound, toward Columbia Turnpike, and the girl apparently was hit after she stepped off the curb to cross the county road to get to Kinney Street, police said. There is no crosswalk at the location.

The driver, Pasqualina Alloca, 45, of Madison, told police she did not see the child, but stopped after she heard a thud and saw the girl in her rearview mirror.

The girl was struck by the passenger side headlight area of the car.

Speed was not a factor, Keymer said. The accident is under investigation. No summonses have been issued at this time.

The children should be able to cross the street safely. Cross walks have been put in place on lesser traveled roads in town. There is no where to cross safely from Ridgedale all the way to Columbia Tpke. Take care of this before the bigger traffic problem begins with BASF and Realology. Prayers for this little child. I am sure the driver is distraught.

Sad Thing Is, I Know This Little Girl And I Know Her Sister. It's Devastating To Hear About This, It Just Makes Me Think, "What If It Was One Of My Family Members, Or What If It Was Me?"

Traffic on Park Av is worsening. It is diffult to get out of your driveway safely. The street needs a speed limit reduction.

I do hope this little girl recovers, and I hope the motorist finds peace, since she accidentally hit the child. The ONLY safe place to cross Park Avenue is at Ridgedale Avenue. Last summer, I tried several times to cross Park Ave at Community Place where there IS a crosswalk and a light, but was almost hit by a motorist (within inches) when I crossed there WITH the green pedestrian light. When I walk into town from Madison Avenue beyond Drew University, I stay on the North side of Madison Avenue and cross at Kings Road to get to Main Street, or I go on Elm Street (carefully) and cross at Ridgedale Avenue. There is no easy or relatively safe way to walk across the street anywhere else. Dropping the speed limit would help since many motorists already routinely go about five or ten miles over posted speed limits even on local roads.
