No Serious Injuries in Hospital Formaldehyde Leak

Spokesperson said five employees were evaluated for exposure.

After an unusual odor was reported at the around 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, crews from Whippany HazMat, the and the investigated and found leaking formaldehyde, according Janina Hecht, a spokesperson for the hospital.

Formaldehyde, according to Hecht, is used to produce formalin, which the hospital uses as a disinfectant and for the "preservation of biological specimens."

Five employees were evaluate for exposure, and, after no serious injuries were immediately reported, units cleared the area by 9 a.m., Hecht said.
