Fire Tears Through Green Village Road Apartment Building

Vacant building in Madison was undergoing renovations.

A three-alarm fire burned through the attic of a vacant Green Village Road apartment building late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as firefighters from several area departments worked to bring the fiery blaze under control.

The three-story building, called Madison Manor Apartments, was undergoing renovations. Open houses for new units were scheduled later this month.

Investigators Wednesday were trying to determine what caused the fire.

Flames shot from the roof, which burned away and, in some parts, collapsed. The third floor sustained fire and water damage, while the second and first floors and the basement sustained water damage, Madison Fire Chief Lou DeRosa said. No injuries were reported.

The fire department responded after a neighbor saw flames and called 9-1-1 at 11:30 p.m.

"We pull up, flames are through the roof," DeRosa said.

The Madison Fire Department called for assistance from 10 other departments over the course of the night: Florham Park, Morris Township, Chatham Borough, Cedar Knolls, Morristown, New Vernon, Green Village, Morris Plains, Chatham Township and Mount Tabor.

Four ladder trucks were positioned around the fire to douse it with water. The fire was under control in about two-and-a-half hours, and some firefighters remained on scene until 6:30 a.m., DeRosa said.

The fire department pumped more than 4 feet of water from the basement that pooled there from the firefighting efforts, the fire chief said.

Madison police, water, electric and public works departments, and the Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the scene.
